MY PROVINCE IS AWESOME.
Gail Shea gets pied in the face by PETA.
And I got an email from my member of parliament that I had to email for my assignment. I'm surprised! We weren't really expecting to get them back so soon - and the other girl who got hers back so quick was like, asked out to dinner by an old guy.
Dear Courtney:
Thank you for asking me to take part in your class assignment on
Provincial politics. I would be happy to answer your questions.
I first became involved in politics in high school, and was the
president of the student union. My affiliation with the Liberal Party
began when I was 13 years old, when my father ran as a Liberal candidate
in the provincial election. My interest was piqued, and since then I
have been involved with the Liberal Party in Eastern Kings.
After graduating with a Business Administration degree, I purchased my
own fishing operation and spent most of my working life in the
fisheries. Before being elected, I was quite involved in serving the
community through a variety of groups, such as the Souris Lions club,
The Souris Group Home, Meals on Wheels, minor hockey, and the North Lake
Harbour Authority.
I have been a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the district of
Souris-Elmira since May 28, 2007, and had the honour of being appointed
as the Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Rural Development. On
January 13, 2009, I was appointed Minister of Innovation & Advanced
Learning, and in this position, I oversee the province’s five-year
economic strategy, Island Prosperity, A Focus for Change.
The goal of the Island Prosperity strategy is to strengthen all sectors
of the Island economy by investing in people, infrastructure, and
innovation.
For me, the most pressing issue today on PEI is ensuring that Islanders
have the skills and education they need to participate fully in
today’s economy. What I would like to see for Souris-Elmira is
what I would like to see for the entire province: a brighter future for
all citizens.
Four sectors of the economy have been identified in Island Prosperity
as having potential for rapid growth. These sectors are bioscience
(including agriculture and fisheries), aerospace, information technology
and renewable energy.
The greatest accomplishment we in government are working towards is for
all Islanders to develop their skills and training to be able to take
part in innovative, fast-growing industries which provide long-term,
well-paying jobs.
Thank you for your thoughtful questions. All the best in your future
studies!
In other news, uh, my parents and I had a big blowout last night. That's not a secret... but Mom's not leaving anymore and she and dad have agreed to try to stop smoking and drinking. In turn, I'm going to overcome my fear of driving and I'm going to learn. We went out for dinner and it was nice.
On another matter... I found out today that my little cousin is getting bullied. Yeah, one of the ones that tried to break my Wii... I think I might try to talk to him about how to handle it.
