I know, it's overdone and overtalked

Let me just admit how disappointed I am in both political parties in regards to the recent revival of the anti-gay marriage debate ( Read more... )

Did you hear about Georgia? Their Supreme Court overturned their amendment against gay marriage... because of a regulation about voting. No one's willing to take up the central issue.

Plus, I don't really understand the political motivation of the Republicans. I've read over and over that they're appealing to the religious right for elections this fall, but shouldn't they be more worried about MODERATE Republicans, who would be more likely to vote for a Dem if need be? But I would imagine that moderates are far less likely to support this amendment.

Even though I completely believe that we have to fight for rights and dignity and equality, right now I have to agree with the democrats' decision. The whole point of even talking about an ammendment is because they are trying to divide people amoungst their "moral" beliefs. I kinda think that at our current state and time, the fact that they are diverging the attention, trying to pronounce political prejudice unto a cultural minority and divide America so that we vote on whether or not we believe in LGBT equality rather than the really HUGE/priority issues, is worthy of immediate critism. People think that if you vote democratically, that means your gay. So they are scared, I guess ( ... )

This is one of the major issues I have with the Republican party and the influence of ultra-conservatives, and I also agree that the Democrats are approaching it all wrong. The Republicans know that currently they get their strongest support from the religious right in primaries and general elections, and that historically moderates do not vote with the same strength. For them, it's maintaining power through succombing to the ideology of the religious right. The Democrats are, unfortunately, trying to follow the same political path, and feel that they cannot go against the "family" values of middle-America if they hope to win elections. For them, it's gaining power by not directly opposing the ideology of the religious right. And that's my problem with it - that both parties feel that they have to play into the hand of the religious right, and that this is the only way to win elections. It's restrictive of an open and fair debate of the issue ( ... )
