Why is the aesthetic valuable?

It occurred to me today that there are two different kinds of aesthetics. The first being an aesthetic within a function, and the other being aesthetic as a function. An example of the former is the push by Apple to make computers look sleek and colorful, or the architecture of Frank Loyd Wright. The latter is meant to encompass things like art and music.

Both of these I think you will find are valuable, but for different reasons, and a distinction should be made between them.
