Recent Amex Commercials

Amex has lately been running some commercials that depict someone conducting some business related transaction. In all of them, when the person attempts to pay with a non-Amex, non-Business card, whatever business transaction was happening falls apart ( Read more... )

Is that like the "Kindergarten Card" ad? The whole premise seemed ridiculous to me... who kills a business deal because someone pays with a specific card... the only time that makes sense is if you use an Amex card to buy lunch for the customer at Visa.

Exactly. But think about it. The switching costs are low. It doesn't take much to get a different card.

They're preying on the fear that all small business people have that any small thing could torpedo business - and by extension their livelihood. The argument is simply that the cost is trivial, but the potential loss of even one deal is potentially devastating. And worst of all, you'll never even know - as has been the case with most of the deals you've ever lost.

It's all about finding a tiny wound...and then rubbing salt in it.
