Escapade 1/4

Being with you here makes me sane,
I fear I’ll go crazy if you leave my side

---

Her brown tresses swayed as she walked towards the transparent case of her wedding dress. With a deep sigh, she laid her hands on it and started tracing random patterns on the smooth surface.

“You don’t tell a woman that you love her two days before her wedding with another man.”

It was soft, especially coming from her who did not learn how to control her emotions, but loud enough for the other person inside the room to hear. She was inside her hotel suite, going through last minute preparations but most of all, calming herself down for one of the most important days in her life.

Silence greeted her but she was not surprised at all. Besides, what do you expect from a man who came in here, seeing as how he is her future husband’s best man, confessing his love to her and getting a sour response in return?

Speaking of that man, he was leaning on the wall beside the window several feet away from her. She couldn’t tell if his head was bent due to the dimmed lighting of the room but she could feel the heavy gaze on her, watching her every move. He has both hands inside his pockets and his left leg over the right one.

“Min-”

Her eyes turn to slits and she knows that he sees them, “Do not call me that Cho Kyuhyun.” She snapped. There, the evidence that her emotions know no limits.

He was clad in dark trousers, an off-white crisp long sleeved top, cuffs unbuttoned and rolled until his elbow, with two buttons undone and tucked out under a black unbuttoned vest. His grayish blue tie hanging loosely around his neck and black polished shoes completed his ragged-looking ensemble. She in turn had on beige thinly strapped empire cut dress that fell just above her knees with dark pearls adorning the neckline. She had already discarded her black heels a while ago, just after entering the room with another man.

It sounded so wrong. She was in a room with a man who was not the one she would be marrying in two day’s time.

“Why are you even here?” Sungmin managed to reply. He has to leave now. She was a woman with a strong resolve, but now, it was breaking apart, little by little.

They just got from the party-two-days-before-the-wedding party organized by some extremely close friends. She did enjoy even with him around. Apparently, when she knew that she had too much of wine, she decided to retire for the night. Her friends accepted of course, even her future husband, but what kind of friends would they be if they let her go back on her own?

Solution was to have someone take her back and what an irony it was. The groom sending the bride away with her ex-boyfriend, one of his best men, to accompany her back to the hotel made her want to laugh at her luck.

Hyukjae, that asshole.

The ride going back, with him driving of course, was silent and tense. After all, she had not talked to Kyuhyun since he got back from China. Well, more of, she vowed to avoid him until the end of the wedding ceremony and during the reception.

However, lady luck was not on her side. She felt her luck run out the moment he offered to drive her home from the party.

Stupid party. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

Anyway, back to the current situation, she just asked him a question so why did he take him so long to answer? She just needed a direct, well phrased, and well thought of answer, one that would -

“I don’t want you to marry him.”

So that was direct, but it did not include the other two requirements she was just pointing out. She totally felt like laughing. She wanted to laugh so hard that it would turn cynic, as if blaming the ones up there who had placed her in this kind of position. She would laugh all day long and pull her hair until it’s not anymore glossy and wavy in a good way. She could probably laugh out loud that anyone, even her future husband, would call her crazy and she could just grow old to be an unmarried, lonely woman.

But that was not happening. Not to Lee Sungmin. Nuh uh.

Her gaze remained on the white cloth inside the crystal case. Such a treasure no one has seen yet, which she planned to keep as secret until the actual day, but one man. The man who just told her right now not to marry in two day’s time.

“You, of all people, shouldn’t be telling me whom to marry or not, Kyuhyun.” Sungmin replied, standing up and looking at him directly while pointing to the direction of the door, “Please get out.” She added.

Her request was denied as she saw him push himself from the wall and walking towards her. She flinched for a second but held her ground. He stopped until he reached her bed which was now the only thing separating them from reaching each other.

“I dare you to take one more step.”

“I dare you to dare me.” He replied.

Oh, the nerve of that man was driving her nuts. “I could scream you know, I could scream so loud that the moment you reach me, guards will break the door down and drag you away before you could even land a finger on me.” Threatening never was her forte, but this man was calling for it.

“Make me.”

And with that, he jumped on the bed, nearly stepping on the crystal case of her wedding gown and took long strides. However, she was not one to lose as she, with all her might, ran. She passed by her dresser and the antique vase that did nothing to lighten her mood. She ran towards the one and only exit she could count on, the bathroom where she could lock herself inside and use the phone to call anyone just to get this man out of her room.

Therefore, that was her game plan, but alas, she felt the heat of his hand grabbing on her wrist just a few steps away from her salvation.

She resorted to screaming, but her voice was muffled down when he covered her mouth with his other hand. She should learn never to underestimate his speed and his ability to think quickly.

This was assault. She’s being dragged against her will and no one could help her out of it. She could feel him letting go of her wrist but his arm snaked around her waist which made him pull her closer. Resisting was futile now, even when she stepped on his foot and tried to bite his hand, she could not break free.

His head on her shoulder seemed to break her chain of thoughts. She could make out the strong scent of cinnamon and an underlying smell of mint, probably taken from his breath. If this situation could not get any more comfortable, he decided to whisper on her ear.

“Listen to me.”

Having no choice, she ended up nodding her response. There was a good ten seconds before he decided to release her and she felt all cold again.

“I won’t be attending the wedding. I already told Hyukjae about this and he agreed.”

Well, this conversation is finally getting somewhere. The thought floated around Sungmin’s head as she thought of the chances that lady luck could return to her side as fast as she had left it.

“But I’ll be waiting.”

Wait, what?

“I’ll wait outside. In a garden overlooking the huge fountain.”

He has got to be kidding, “What the fu-”

“I’ll wait the whole day for-”

She turned to look at him straight in the eye, “I would not be there, Kyuhyun.” She replied, “So don’t wait anymore. It’s useless.” Sungmin hoped that she sounded convincing.

It was convincing, but why does it seem that she was convincing herself?

“I’m sorry but-”

Sungmin rushed towards the open door of the bathroom pulled on the doorknob and once the she banged the door close, she fell to the floor, sobbing.

This was unfair, he was unfair, and everything seems to be unfair. Her wedding was in a few days’ time and she could not jeopardize it. She did everything to keep all together and here comes one man destroying everything she had worked hard for.

Approaching the sink and lifting her hands to the automated machine, water came and she splashed her face, feeling the coldness of it.

His scent was intoxicating and she was slowly dying inside from even wanting to smell it again.

“… I love you.”

---

That was the last glass he was going to take in for the rest of the night. She swore that it would be.

Hazel eyes gleamed under the dimmed lights of the club as it stared at a red haired man in pure distaste. She noted how he looked half-drunk and the people, their friends, were still giving him so much to drink. Lifting herself up from the stool by the counter, she placed her glass of martini on the counter and flashed a grin to the bartender. She got a sly smirk in response and she mentally kicked herself for even looking at him.

It was already one on the morning and she found it quite weird of her to stay long in a party she did not want to attend. But alas, she was one of the bridesmaids and it would not look good if she was not in their two-days-before-the-wedding-day party.

She neared the group table and mentally cringed at how Hyukjae looked like, if she did not know that he will get married in two days’ time, she would think that he was getting over a sham of a marriage. No one noticed her nearing but when she placed her hand on Sungmin’s shoulder, the latter looked up and mouthed,

‘Get him out of there.’ A small smile came out after.

Donghae smiled in reply, “Don’t worry.” She bent down and took a seat beside the bride, “Why are you still here? You might destroy the wedding look we’ve all worked hard to go for if you suddenly developed eye bags.” She added.

“I guess so…” Donghae heard her reply. Honestly, it was hard not to hate Sungmin because the innocent look she has 24/7 makes you melt. It sounds weird, especially coming from her, but Donghae knew that it was what made Hyukjae fall for her.

And mind you, she was trying hard not to be jealous.

She watched Sungmin stand up and grab her black pouch. The people in the table finally noticed and suddenly started whining on how it was still early and how the real party had not even started. Donghae watched Sungmin reason out that she was tired and to keep a leash on Hyukjae even if she was not around. Everyone laughed at that and Donghae tried her hardest to laugh along with them. When it was not enough, Sungmin looked at her and winked then told the others that she would develop eye bags if not given enough time to sleep.

At this, Heechul, the one sitting on the other side demanded that Sungmin must sleep. Donghae mentally laughed at this and everyone else nodded their assent. Who would, after all, go against the one and only Heechul? However, they did not want Sungmin to leave until someone escorts her back to the hotel.

At this, Donghae noted, Heechul pushed someone beside her - a guy, one who Donghae has yet to meet - stood up and volunteered himself to bring Sungmin back to the hotel. Donghae looked at the mysterious guy strangely, he looks like one of Hyukjae’s best men, but she could not put a finger on who he is.

“That’s settled! Kyuhyun shall bring Sungmin home!”

Then there it was. Kyuhyun. The name was not foreign at all in Donghae’s mind. Hyukjae, who in all of his drunken stupor just nodded lazily, lifting a shot glass to show his agreement and with that, the two walked towards the exit and she followed them with her eyes.

It was funny how when Sungmin looked back at her, she was not only reminded by the fact that she has to drag a drunk Hyukjae out of the club, but she also saw a flash of worry in them.

Standing up again, she walked towards Hyukjae who was still downing on the contents of another glass. ‘He really is an idiot.’ She thought.

But I’m an idiot who fell for an idiot.

“Okay. That’s it. Time’s up.” She said loud and clear to all of them as she placed both of her hands on either side of Hyukjae’s face. “It’s morning already and I don’t want to be a reckless bridesmaid who’s going to leave when her best friend is currently not in a proper state of consciousness.”

A chorus of ‘Awwwwww’, ‘Donghae you killjoy’, and her personal favorite, ‘But he’s not drunk yet!’

Wow. Way to go retard.

“Hyukkie, it’s time to go. Come on.” She whispered hoping that even in his drunken mind, he could still hear her. “mmmhhhrrmmm..” She heard him say and fought the urge to slap him awake.

“I’m… n-not hic d-drunk Haeeeeeeeee..”

Grabbing onto his arms, she hoisted him up his feet. It sounds cool, for her to seem so strong. “Sure, Hyuk, try to sound a more convincing the second time around, alright?” Making sure that she did not leave any belongings aside, she walked with him until they reached the parking lot.

She made him lean on the car so that they could both rest, well, more like for her to catch her breath. Dragging a drunk and unwilling man was a hard feat and she was mentally celebrating on her achievement.

“Hyukjae, let’s go?”

It took a while for her to hear a response but when a, “I don’t want to yet” from him, she felt like slapping herself.

“No can do mister. I’m not letting you look like a drunken idiot two days before your wedding.” Actually, she could treasure this short moment - even if he was drunk - because she knew that it’s one moment that she could never get back.

Not after the wedding. Not anymore.

Pulling on her best friend’s hand, she tugged but he resisted and it was a futile attempt because he would not move. “Hyuk, come on. I’m tired and you’re tired. So let’s call it a night in order for you to fix up and be ready for last minute preparation shit tomorrow. You’ll be a happy man in your wedding, you’ll see.”

Her pulling stopped when he said, “But I’m not… hic gonna get married to hic… you…”

Okay, somehow, this has got to end before he starts sprouting out more nonsense and whatnot. However, she liked hearing that from him, a drunken babbling idiot.

“You’re not making sense Hyuk. Come on, let me help you get in your car. I’ll even call your driver because I don’t think you could drive in this state.” She got the keys in his pockets and opened the door. She started ushering him inside trying to push him down, but he was not cooperating and instead, grabbed her arms and dragged her along with him.

He landed on the soft car seat and she was blushing madly. This was not right. Of all the things that could happen to her, a moment like this was at the very end of her mind.

“Lee Hyukjae. Let. Me. Go.”

There was a muffled sound and she decided to just give up trying to talk to him. Struggling to get up, her efforts remained futile because he would not let go.

“Hyukkie, I swear-”

“I really, really like you D-hic-onghae hic.”

Oh my goodness. Not again.

“No hic, wait… hic… I don’t think hic… I like… hic you. I loooooove hic yooou!!”

Donghae stopped struggling. She stopped wriggling her way out of grasp and just stayed there. His weird confession brought all her actions to a sudden halt and she feels dizzy as if out of her mind.

When his breathing became even, she decided to whisper her thoughts to him.

“I love you too Hyuk, but you and Min are my best friends. I can’t risk losing any of you two.”

With that, she gently got out of Hyukjae’s hold and went outside the car. She considered dialing his driver already but instead, she got her bag and held out her Cannon 500D SLR camera, turned it on and removed the flash. She focused it on the sleeping figure and took a photo of him.

Staring at the photo, she felt the stinging feeling in her eyes. It was happening now and she cannot do anything to stop it. She would still be happy though, it is her two best friends in the whole world. How can she not be?

Damnit, it sucks to be the photographer of a wedding she would hate to take pictures - memories - of.
