this is where i've been living the past couple of days:
yes, that is an ap stylebook on my couch. shut up. here's the other angle:
it's not very big, but i like it a lot. here's the view:
so, not optimal.
anyway, i spent most of the afternoon walking around central park and
the area surrounding my apartment. here's a few of the things i saw:
rockefeller
center. the city's crawling with midshipmen ashore for fleet week.
maybe i can go see one of the ships after i move closer to the ports.
a statue of atlas across the street from st. paul's cathedral.
my first in-person philip johnson building: the museum of television
and radio. (i couldn't get far enough away from it to get a good angle
of the whole thing.)
living statue in central park.
tiny piece of skyline.
this is by far my absolute favorite thing from today. it might look
familiar if you've seen 'angels in america,' but it's better known as
the bethesda fountain. it was included in the original plans for
central park and it's surrounded by a great courtyard. i love this
fountain.
i also walked up to the metropolitan museum of art, but i didn't go in
(i get my times ID soon and all kinds of perks and free museum
admission and fun things like that) and there was scaffolding covering
most of the facade, so that was a bit disappointing. on my way home i
also saw a very dark and empty-looking carnegie hall.
i spent most of my afternoon walking, but i did spend quite a bit of
time reading the times in the park next to a statue of robert burns,
which was delightful, thanks to the lovely weather today. after
tomorrow, i'll be separated from all this by not a few blocks of
walking, but by a subway ride. i don't want to move again, and the very
idea makes me tired. but i'm trying to stay upbeat and not get too
nervous about starting my actual job.
garrison (from bootcamp) and i had a good conversation over dinner
(same cafe we ate in last night.. that waitress is going to think we're
strange) in which he told me i wouldnt' be here if they didn't
think i could do it, which was sort of what i needed to hear. it's
still so hard to believe that in just a few days i'm taking a giant
step into the professional world.
i'm going to end this now before my internet connection dies again, but
there'll be more updates later. i'm struggling with taking pictures.. i
have to do it quickly so i don't look like a bloody tourist, so they
haven't been turning out as well as i would have liked. i'll work
on that. next update will come from greenwich village.. exciting.
