we are not on a contract anymore
here it's a bit different, especially in apartment complexes managed by a company. when you start renting the place you can choose the length of your contract - let's say you choose 1 year.
so when the year is over - you can choose to renew the contract or just continue paying month-to-month without an renewing. it has it pros and cons. one of the pros is that you can move out whenever (need to give notice, but still) and one of the cons is that they can raise your rent whenever (also, need to give you notice).
