What is a "maverick"?
The last time I checked, it meant an "irresponsible person", or "someone who seizes something illegally"...

I have no idea what McCain & Co. mean by it anymore, but the New York Times has a brief bit on the family with the name:

In it's recent usage, it means "stupid aging asshole, about to be trounced".
In western novels, it usually referred to renegade cattle who were loners and wouldn't join the herd.
