The fishing poles for guns (mandatory) program: coming soon to a socialist republic near you.

At least I'll have some other folks to talk to in line, the gun-toting maniacs will be turning in their hardware while the filthy homosexuals are turning in their marriage licenses.

WTF is wrong with people?

Me, I agree with Charlton Heston about them having to wrench my gun out of cold dead hand.

I'm ashamed of those Californians that voted YES on 8 and I hope that they experience an equally devastating impact on their personal lives as this proposition has/will made/make on the lives of the LGBT community.

Frankly stuff like Prop 8 has no business being on the ballot at all.

"Marriage" should incur no legal or tax benefits, for anyone, period, and I fail to see why it does. Oh wait, I remember, it's because we're a Christian nation.

As something not outlined in the Constitution, this is up to the states and local governments to decide. And IMO all we need is the equivalent of an emergency contact card. "In case I should become unable to make decisions for myself the following person(s) are authorized to make medical and financial decisions regarding my health and estate." Something to that effect. Basically saying who can say whether to perform that dangerous operation, and who gets your crap when you die.

Done.

"Marriage" is just a word defined by individuals, social organizations, churches, knitting circles, whatever. If you don't like your club's definition, find a new club.

I agree that "marriage" should not have any tax benefits but I am unsure of how to rectify it having legal benefits. And yes, Virginia, it IS because we are a Christian nation. *grump*

There IS something that is the equivalent of an emergency contact card, it's called a Living Will, or, a Health Care Directive and there is also another form called a Medical Power of Attorney. The only problem is that these documents are only in relation to your health care; you'll need a separate document for Estate Planning. Luckily, there are a lot of places you can get the forms to be filled-out, sometimes for free, but you still have to pay to have it notarized.

I also agree with you in so much as to how "marriage" is defined. The main reason Mr. C and I are being legally married is because of the protections we will be able to gain under the law. Either way, we'll be having a commitment ceremony...

Nah. Follow the money. The main purpose of marriage throughout human history has been to ensure that wealth can be transferred across generational lines within the family unit. It was never about love, and only incidentally about children.
