Harry Potter and the Financial Inconsistency?

I can't take full credit for this train of thought. Richard raised the question.

If James and Lily Potter were killed by Voldemort when Harry was a baby... James and Lily were barely in their twenties.

Where'd they get all the money that wound up in Gringott's Bank Vault when Harry first got there?

um, do you ACTUALLY want me to go through and point out exactly how many *wrong* statements are in this? or shall i just pretend i didn't see it and go merrily on my way? (here's a hint: check the birth dates of James and Lily.)

Hm. I don't see why it should be implausible that the Potters were rich? James certainly behaved like a spoiled brat most of his life. ;) And being a big family doesn't make you richer, just the opposite. I also remember a Potter being on the Black family tree. Not sure what exactly it was the books had to say on the matter, beyond stating that James was a pureblood, but methinks it was at least strongly implied that the Potters were just a family of old money.
