Or does the world often seem more unkind these days... more demanding about respect and correctness? Yes in past ages there was intolerance and a lot of bad things happening in terms of racism, discrimination, and intolerance.
But these days-- if you're don't agree with someone, you disrespect them. You protest, you fight, you intrude, and never back down till you get your way. I understand that in a way because no one wants to be stepped on and these days, you kind of have to fight for your rights. Otherwise, you lose.
But it makes it painful to watch the Facebook stream. Everyone's got a cause they're ready to fight for and usually someone else gets attacked in the process. And it's not like I can't understand both sides. For me it's a bit like extreme food eating, drug use (even prescription), or bungee jumping from a bridge. I think anything to the extremes-- anything can be foolish. But do I understand that the difference is for each individual there is a point of "this is my limit".
There's a fine balance between benefit outweighing the risk.
But that's not just eating odd foods or X-games. Why is it for those things we can give people respect? But when they don't agree with our views on abortion, on homosexuality, police and public, on how they want to be able to live their lives... that we must call them idiots. Sure we might feel that way. But that doesn't also give us a right to hate them. They just believe different things than we do.
That doesn't mean I won't always explain why I feel a certain way or believe a certain thing. I will always have reasons why I feel what I feel. But I understand why others feel the opposite way. I've just leaned one way or another based on what I feel is the proper balance between benefits/risks/right/wrong. I might live more in the shadows on some things, more in the light on others.
But I understand that we're all doing the best we can as humans. So it hurts all the time to see so much disrespect, so much of the niceties gone from society. Sure I scream at the drivers, scream at the system. But in the end? I still think we have the best system around. And me? I'll keep actively thinking, writing, and actually doing as much as I can to make it a better place where people can disagree but still love each other and find places for everyone.
People doing the best they can in a world we all know has too much suffering. Best wish and much love.
