So... wow, this seems a bit surreal. I mean, he was only my student for a quarter, but I still said hi to him in the halls and he was always very polite and kind to me. I think he got in trouble a lot in the other classes on my team, though ( Read more... )

I know. He was a nice kid, at least, to me. It's so ridiculously sad to see this happen to him.

It's so sad when kids do things like that. Playing around with a gun ... yes, it's a game to them. They have no idea what it really means. And then it goes off and suddenly they are faced with reality, and probably they still don't understand what's going on. Because at 14, I don't think they really do.

That is really tragic.

Perhaps because I'm a parent I can't help but sigh and shake my head at the lack of action on the parent's part. Had the parents of either child been more involved in their children's lives then this incident may have been avoided. On top of that, whoever gave those kids a gun should be prosecuted, IMHO. It's rediculous to blame the minor for the deed entirely when it's very likely they recieved a loaded gun from an adult. In many states it's a requirement to store the magazine and ALL ammunition outside of and seperately from the gun. So just saying "we didn't know" is still negligence. Such a shame. It really is.
