I have been suffering from teh slack, but I do want to get Eddie's backstory up here, essay-form or nay. So I shall do it in points, each point more mind-boggling than the first.
I. Before Roland
- Born in New York. Story picks up for him in 1987.
- Raised by mother and older brother, Henry. No idea where Daddy is and Eddie doesn't give a flying fuck. Had a sister who got hit by a car because she had nobody to look after her. This brought on Henry's constant hovering of Eddie.
- Was always more skilled than Henry at both sports (basketball), crafts (whittling) and probably thinking. Was a bit of a bookworm, who liked to listen to them on tapes. Big LotR fan and generally any epic fantasy. Was teased endlessly for most of these by Henry so he tends to feel self-conscious about them. Deliberately threw sports games to Henry so he could feel like the older brother.
- Henry went off to war and came back messed up. He got into heroin to deal and Eddie, being constantly around him, got into it too. Several times Henry tried to leave but Eddie just couldn't let him and ended up forcing him to stay many times. Eddie started out only casually fixing but eventually got more into it, to the point where he and Henry got tangled up with the mob.
- While Eddie was off doing so drug deal for the mob, the mobsters kidnapped Henry as insurance. Eddie (half-sharing a body with Roland) returned to get him and some epic gang warfare went down, where Eddie and Roland collectively killed EVERYONE. In the midst of this, Henry overdosed and one of the mobsters chopped off his head to distract Eddie. Last scene of the brothers together is Eddie clutching Henry's severed head while crying. Ala the X movie. |D
II. Roland
- Roland meets Eddie when he walks through a inter-dimensional door in Mid-World and ends up semi-possessing Eddie. Since Roland has just been badly mauled by mutant lobsters, he needs Eddie's body to fetch him some medicine and agrees to help Eddie clear customs with his drugs. Eddie doesn't trust or like Roland at first, but as Roland scares the fuck out of him and as clearing customs is really tricky, he goes along with it. Cue Roland/Eddie combo returning to New York and having gang fight.
- Roland decides his needs Eddie as one of his Three predicted in some destined tarot reading. Eddie is the Prisoner. He takes Eddie back to Mid-World with him, minus his drugs. This does not get the best of reactions from Eddie. There are numerous instances of Eddie trying to kill Roland so he can go through the interdimensional doors and return to his world to get his fix. Despite this, Eddie is also afraid of dying on his own in Mid-World so he helps nurse Roland back to health.
- When Roland draws Susannah, a 1970s woman with multiple personalities (one a vicious stereotypical African American and the other a sophisticated rich lady), she and Eddie hit it off almost immediately. She is the Lady of the Shadows. She also tries to kill Roland and Eddie many times and even hogties Eddie and tries to feed him to the mutant lobsters, but that's neither here or there. Basically, they fall in love and declare themselves married. Note: King cannot write romance.
- Eddie, now mostly recovering from his addiction, trains under Roland to become a gunslinger. He starts getting visions of the Rose (very important Dark Tower symbol) and Jake (very important kid to Roland) and uses these visions and his past skills to whittle together the key that allows Roland to draw his Third: Jake. Eddie pretty much grows to see Jake as his brother. Eddie also begins to understand Roland's drive to find the Tower, in his love of the Rose. He later tells Roland that he's tired of being dragged along and from now on, he is coming with Roland out of choice and Roland will have to be straight with them. Big moment for Eddie since Roland realizes that Eddie is smarter than he gave him credit for. He also has to overcome his reminders of Henry's vicious teasing to get the confidence to finish the key. This is a dark period for the aftermath of the brothers' relationship.
- The light period comes in Eddie having to overcome a psychotic AI monorail. Recalling Henry's past praise about his ability to talk anyone down, Eddie manages to bust the super-intelligent monorail with dumb jokes since it had previously been able to easily answer everyone else's riddles. The monorail had made a bet with Roland's ka-tet that if they could stump it with a riddle, it wouldn't kill them. Defeating the mono earns Eddie even more of Roland's respect and gives him more confidence. But it also signifies Eddie truly making peace with his brother.
- Everyone finds out about Roland's past. Translation: it sucks.
- Uh Eddie learns how to ride horses and fights robots? There is also some tension when the ka-tet realizes that Susannah is pregnant with a demon's baby. Just go with me here. Roland doesn't want anyone to tell her, but she eventually finds out. Roland's deception places much strain on the group.
- Eddie also shows his hardening gunslinger edge in dealing with protecting the Rose from the same mobsters that killed his brother but in the past and in another world. Despite his concern for his semi-possessed wife (who has run away), he shows more of a Roland mentality as he takes Roland to meet the writer Stephen King, another person he saw in visions and who is an agent of destiny/ka. As long as it takes him to admit it, Eddie believes in ka as much as Roland almost, although he still bitches about it.
- FINAL BOOK: After maturing through all his travels with Roland, Eddie eventually gets shot and killed in a showdown to protect the Beams that support the universe more or less. His last vision is of a dangerous vampire, who he tells Jake to protect Roland from.
