A softbox makes the harsh lights softer. Basically it diffuses the light.

Instead of the light being very focused it spreads it out evenly.

I'm so scared of ebay, you have no idea.

Question - the kit you got, are they strobe lights or are they continuous ?

My camera, D40 is really basic and doesn't have the ability to control external flash slaves without cables...

So long as you're protected by using paypal, and not directly through your card you'll be fine. also if the seller has a good ebay rating, it's also a good sign.

I have dirty cheap ones that use a cable as well. My knowledge on external lights and slaves only goes so far because of the ones I've used. but they went for about 180 for two, so i can't complain.

they are strobes and have a very weak continuos light to help focus.
