[Background]
http://myanimelist.net/character/38194/Mami_Tomoe [Personality]
Mami is a 15 year old girl, one year older than Madoka and Sayaka. She has a very mature and polite demeanour; that of a well-mannered young lady. When she first meets the girls who are trapped in a Witch’s barrier, she saves them by transforming into a Puella Magi and defeating the monsters that threatened them. She is very noble, and will come to the aide of anyone who needs it. Being a more experienced Puella Magi, she tries to act as a mentor and teacher to Madoka and Sayaka, giving them a peek into the life of a Puella Magi and the risks that come with it. As demonstrated in run-ins with Homura, she does not have a temper. Instead, she constantly speaks in a calm and soft tone even when speaking of her intent to kill her if their paths cross again.
Mami definitely has a lot of pride in her power as a veteran Puella Magi, but is very modest about it. In contrast to the stoic Homura and the fiery Kyoko who will kill her Puella Magi competition, Mami fights witches with the sake of saving humanity in mind and tries to pass on these views to Sayaka and Madoka. Although she tries to act as a leader for the other girls, she is secretly very lonely and scared. Aside from Homura and Kyoko (both of whom share different views on fighting witches and whom she frequently disagrees with), Mami is the only Puella Magi she knows, and therefore works alone. Only in the moments before her death does she realize that she’s not alone with Sayaka and Madoka ready to comfort and fight with her.
Mami’s strengths lie in her fighting skills and “big sisterly” attitude. She is a very strong Puella Magi, and knows how to use her powers to the best of their ability. She can keep her cool even when situations look grim, and provide reassurance and comfort to those who need it (i.e. victims of a Witch’s kiss who are scared and traumatized after snapping out of their daze). Some of her weaknesses are her fear of being alone, her obliviousness to the true nature of the Puella Magi (although it may not seem like it, when Mami finds out the truth of the Puella Magi, her mind snaps and she does not hesitate to kill one of the other girls before being killed herself), and the destruction of her Soul Gem (on a physical level, I will elaborate on this below).
[Abilities]
In point form, for quick reference, her abilities as a Puella Magi. As a human, she is powerless.
• Can create an endless amount of muskets from nothing, each with one bullet
• "Tiro Finale", her final hit move, creates a large cannon that fires at the enemy (Tiro Finale means "Final Shot" in Italian)
• Modifying normal objects to give them magical properties
• Using the ribbon around her neck to cut through objects,
• Creating magical ribbons that can stabilize to create bridges and such, catch a falling object or person and bind a person until she releases them
• Using magic to heal minor injuries/cuts
most of her abilities are showcased here. [Other important stuff]
Unbeknownst to her, the egg-shaped “Soul Gem” that she carries to transform into a Puella Magi is just that; it contains her soul. If it is broken, then Mami instantly dies. In her Puella Magi form, it is the middle part of the flower ornament in her hair is her Soul Gem. Break that part, and she drops dead.
If she is to ever find out the true nature of the Puella Magi, her mind will snap and she will attempt to kill and Puella Magi she finds before killing herself. By doing this, she will believe that she is preventing more Witches from being born.

[First Person]
Ah, so I’m supposed to be answering this questionnaire, am I? Well, I suppose I could, as long as it doesn’t take too long. I’m sure this will be an enjoyable experience.
- What do you think of your home world?
Of course, Earth is a wonderful place to live. I don’t think I would live anywhere else, if that were even possible. Granted, fighting Witches is a downside but it is my payment for Kyuubey granting my wish and saving my life. At the very least, I am not alone anymore with Kaname-san and Miki-san by my side.
- What were you doing before now?
I… was fighting a Witch. Kaname-san’s words had given me quite the confidence boost, but I think being transported into this strange interview has saved my life. That Witch was powerful and quite terrifying… at least I am away from danger for the moment. I certainly hope Miki-san and Kaname-san are alright… I’m sure Kyuubey will protect them somehow.
- If I offered to save your soul for a price, would you go with it and why?
Unfortunately, someone has already beaten you to the punch. I have already contracted with Kyuubey to save my life; said price was taking on the responsibility of fighting Witches as a Puella Magi. Doing it again would all depend on what this price would entail. This time I would have a choice, unlike my contract with Kyuubey.
- Would you consider yourself a hero or a villain? Why? Neither is an option as well, but still tell why.
I think I would definitely consider myself a hero. I have been given the power to fight Witches: beings who are born from curses and who are responsible for murders and suicides. I believe that the definition of a hero would be one who protects people from such dangers, even if they are unrecognized. Even though it is tiring and endless, I am proud of what I do.
- Murder. What is your opinion?
It is definitely a terrible crime that should not be tolerated. Taking one’s life is never acceptable, even with so-called “good” intentions. No one truly deserves to die, no matter how terrible the sin they have committed. I aim to prevent such casualties to the best of my ability, if they are due to a Witch’s Kiss. It is my duty as a Puella Magi to eliminate any Witch who threatens to steal an innocent person’s life away.
- Someone comes to you to ask for the time. How would you respond?
I would politely give them the time if I knew, of course. Asking a stranger a question even as simple as this can be a bit unnerving to do. The least I can do is “give them the time of day”, right? [ giggles. ]
If I do not have the time, I would apologize and say I don’t know. This is a bit of a strange question; I don’t see why anyone else would respond differently…
Oh, is this the end of the questionnaire? Ah well, this was definitely an interesting experience. I appreciate you listening to my small ramblings; perhaps we could do this again over tea sometime. I’d also ask you not to repeat anything I’ve shared with you today. Being a Puella Magi is a bit of a secret of mine… but I’m terrible at keeping those. I can assure you that I have been completely honest with you throughout this interview.
[Third Person]
It had been about a week since Mami had arrived in this strange world. The people around called it “Somarium”, a world of dreams. Somehow she had wandered off from her so-called “home” to this place; a tranquil, crystal clear lake. If she looked up, she could see a gigantic floating mountain. Vaugely she wondered, "how can this be? Not only does that defy the laws of gravity, but reaching that mountain would normally be impossible. How inconvenient."
Though, that train of thought was quickly stopped. If she could harness magic, and this truly was a world of dreams, then things like this would probably be the norm.
Unconsciously, she kept her hands together. She needed to know that her Soul Gem was ready to transform at any time. She had heard from locals that monsters took residence in this land too, so she was prepared to defend herself. She approached the lake, quietly taking in the beautiful looks of the landscape.
To herself, she sighed. “This really is a beautiful world… one without violence or strife; A true dream world. I can’t help it but think there’s a catch…” Mami was definitely one who was familiar with catches. She lived through a car crash that killed her family, only to risk her life numerous times and fight witches to keep her alive. It was all strangely ironic, and it left her only the slightest bit paranoid.
With caution, she approaches the water and kneels down. Almost hesitant to disturb the pure, untouched surface of the water, she runs a hand gently through the liquid. It’s a cool, refreshing feeling, and she sighs. When the water settles, she looks at her reflection. This was no illusion. She was really here, everything she touched and saw was reality. Thinking of what was going on back home was something she had to eliminate from her mind. This was here and now; she was sent here for a reason, right? The only thing to do now was to find that reason and fulfil it to the best of her ability.
[Why do you want to play this character in Somarium?]
I’ve liked Mami from the start of the Puella Magi series. She’s a strong character who acts as a mentor, but still has a soft side to her. I have a cast coming to app with me, so hopefully playing here together with them would be lots of fun!
[Which rule was your favorite and why?]
Being honest, the “no playercest” rule. It bothers me when I see it in other games; it doesn’t really give other characters a chance to interact. Props to you guys for nipping it in the bud!
[Any questions?]
Puella Magi are sort of like vampires in a sense that they need “nourishment” to survive. While vampires need blood, Puella Magi need “Grief Seeds”, the eggs of Witches, to purify their soul gems. If they do not have these Grief Seeds, they essentially die and their souls become that of a Witch itself. In this case, is there any kind of alternative to Grief Seeds that could keep Mami and the others alive in the event that they need to restore magic they’ve used? This was answered in Sayaka's application. Oops. ;3;
Oh, and what’s your favourite dessert?
