Mickey Mouse WAS supposed to become public domain in 2003, under old copyright laws, but somehow the rules got changed right before he went up for grabs. As long as Disney (the company not the man) exists, that mouse is well protected.
Also, Disney created Mickey in such a way that only 6 people in the world can even draw him. Try drawing Mickey yourself, I dare you to try. You will be very disapointed with the results.

One time, for no particular reason, I spend like 2 hours drawing pictures of Mickey Mouse in a notebook and while I was in the midst of it Alex knocked on my door and I got self conscious and closed the notebook before opening the door. He asked, "what are you up to?" and I was like "nothing" in an annoyed tone and the he goes, "drawing Mickey Mouse, huh" because he spotted a piece of paper I'd torn out of the notebook that was covered in drawings of Mickey Mouse. Embarrassing!
