Summary: Mary Anne wants to watch old movies, but Shannon's having none of it...

“Mary Anne?”

Guiltily, I looked round, grabbing a tissue from the box next to me as I did so. I sniffed, and Shannon rolled her eyes as I wiped my own.

“Come on, then, what is it this time? Lassie? It’s a Wonderful Life? Oprah?”

I shook my head, and un-muted the TV. “The Sound of Music,” I admitted. “Liesl and Rolf were dancing out in the rain, and they looked so in love. Oh, it was so romantic…” I trailed off as Shannon began to laugh.

“Oh Mary Anne, you’re so cute.” She swooped to drop a kiss on the tip of my nose, then threw her textbooks on to her desk with a flourish.

“Do you have loads of work to do today?” I asked, stretching out on my bed. It was almost lunchtime, but as I had no classes on a Tuesday, I had decided to treat myself to a rare lazy morning. Shannon, being pre-med and therefore far busier than a humble Lit major, had no such luxury.

“Nope, I have whole afternoon free. We should do something. Something fun.” Even as she spoke, my eyes were straying back to the TV and she shook her head. “Nuh-uh, not weepy musicals. Look - it’s the most gorgeous day outside.” She pulled back the curtains and sunlight flooded the dorm room.”

“But I’m sleepy, Shanny. Couldn’t we just curl up in bed, watch the movie and, well, you know?” The transition from roommates to lovers had been seamless - one thing had just led to another - but I still found it hard to talk about some of things we did together. Old habits die hard, I guess.

Shannon arched an eyebrow. “You want to ‎’you know’ in the middle of the day? I’m impressed!” She jumped on to my bed and straddled me, leaning down to kiss me full on the mouth this time. The sun was warm on her blonde curls as I reached around her back to pull her to me, but she scooted out of my way and back to the window.

“Nope, not gonna work. Let’s go out, take a walk across the quad or something. If you’re missing the von Trapps, I could sing.” She twirled one of the curtains around herself, and began to warble, “Mary Anne’s kisses and Mary Anne’s slippers, Mary Anne crying about Nemo’s flippers - ”

“Hey, that gimpy fin is tragic!” I interjected.

“Mary Anne blushing like rhubarb in Spring, these are a few of my favourite things.” She bowed, and perched on her desk chair, still humming to herself.”

“I swear you should’ve taken drama,” I grumbled as I pulled on jeans and a shirt, but inside I was grinning. Being many of Shannon’s favourite things did not suck.

“So Miss Mary Anne, are you glad I dragged you out of the swamp now?” We were lying on our backs under a huge oak tree, sun breaking through the leaves to dapple us with spots of brightness. Shannon’s fingers were linked with mine, and my head rested against her shoulder.

“Definitely. Even the absence of Julie Andrews is bearable. It’s so peaceful out here, we must be the only people not hitting the books today.”

“Mmm, romantic, isn’t it? I bet Liesl never had this much fun.”

“And why’s that? I’m sure she and Rolf had the quite the time together.”

“Yeah, but Rolf never got to take her home after their little liaisons did he? I can lie here in the sun with you, seduce you with a burrito, and then take you back to the dorm and screw your brains out.”

“Shanny!” I exclaimed, sitting up and looking around, even though I knew there was no one nearby to hear. She chuckled, and leaned up to kiss me again. I succumbed to it, letting the sun catch the back of my neck as I pressed my lips against hers.

After a long time I sat back up, breathless and embarrassed at such a public display of affection. “Now then, what was that you said about a burrito? Do I sense lunch is on you?”

Shannon sighed exaggeratedly. “Well, I suppose I can stretch to it just this once.” I giggled, thinking of her wallet full of Platinum cards. “C’mon, let’s go. I’m starving.” She jumped up and began to jog back towards campus, me struggling to keep up with her, as always.

It was almost an hour later as we sat, greasy-fingered and full, that the heavens opened and our gorgeous day appeared to be over. I made a grab for Shannon’s hand and we ran, shrieking, back towards our dorm. We were almost there when she stopped and wrapped her arms around me.

“Hey Liesl, wanna dance?” She began to whirl me around the courtyard, her dreadful off-key singing keeping time. My hair hung in rats’ tails and my glasses had steamed up, but for once I didn’t care what people would think if they saw me. It was only Shannon and me that mattered.

As we came to a standstill, Shannon wiped the rain from my face, her blue eyes shining. “Was that romantic enough for you?”

I nodded. “Definitely. Now take me upstairs and screw my brains out.”
