it's kind of ironic that Amazon's ipod-for-books, the Kindle, is coming out at the same time as this study about how no one reads anymore, not even the backs of cereal boxes, not even warning labels. in fact, you're not reading this right now; you're actually watching television and idly thinking about voting Republican.

hrmm. sometimes i think i am the only person who is not really worried about reading. i think it is natural that as there are new forms of entertainment, we will lose people who were only casual readers anyway to new devices and fads. but there will always be hardcore readers. maybe i only think this because i am from an extended family of smart people and i am the only one who reads. dude, even my boyfriend doesn't read.

most of the people I ride next to on the subway are reading. a lot of them even read actual paper newspapers, which I gave up long ago. who are these study authors and where do they live? someplace without public transportation?

i do find it amazing and wonderful how many people read on the subway. i wonder if people read more or less in cities in general. there are more distractions, in some ways, but also more bookstores and more of a cultural expectation that you're well read.

kick-ass detective novels set in charm city with a woman PI as the main character. highly recommended. and hard not to read in one city.
