Sad! Computer deaths are so tragic. And I have no advice. These are moments when I call Erin.

TechBargains.com has a bunch of internet deals on laptops. Dell frequently has a lot of sales/coupons/etc you can apply. Their workmanship isn't the best out of every laptop manufacturer, but you'd be hard-pressed to find better deals.

Ecost.com is another good site for deals. They also list a lot of refurbished stuff, which can save you money if you're willing to buy certified-used equipment.

I'm pretty sure Costco has new and refurbished laptops at good prices if you have a card. My roommate swears by them.

If you've been talking to Eric, I'm sure he could point out a better store or model. Rule of thumb these days is at least 512 MB of RAM and a processor at least 1.5 GhZ and up. Intel Pentium M's give a great bang for the buck. Not too sure on the Athlon side, unfortunately.

And there's always Apple. People really like their notebooks for usability, build quality, etc, but you pay a premium to use Apple products. Same with IBM.

I hope this helps... and I'm sorry about the loan. :(
