character info.
character name: Harold (aka 'Hal') Wayne
canon & medium: Vassalord, manga
age & species: 13, human
appearance: Isn't he cute?
timeline: End of Chapter 15
background/history: It is important to note that Harold has been disabled since birth; he is forced to use a wheelchair. He is the only child of Alford Wayne, the owner of a Pharmaceutical Company that's gathered attention due to their new drugs.

Harold first appeared in the Vassalord manga as a helpless child that Charley helped; he had fallen from his chair and seemed rather stuck, trying his best to gather up papers. Charley helps him to get back to his feet (metaphorically), and he leaves. Johnny catches the boy looking at them from around a corner after he teases Charley; he doesn't mention it, though.

Downstairs, the police swarm the building; a dead girl has been discovered hanging from a cross. Of course, the police are suspicious of Charley and Johnny - there were alone together, despite the Vampire Hunter Cheryl confronting them - until Harold comes along. He is able to act as their alibi, allowing them to leave without further interrogation. When Charley and Johnny do leave, however, the officer that had been interrogating them (Craig) warns Hal that he shouldn't get mixed up with those sorts of people.

The story moves along, focussed on the protagonists, and when Hal reappears it seems that he has been kidnapped. The odd thing about the kidnapping, however, is that it seems that his father was the one to do it. Saying that he needed to use the bathroom, Hal managed to find a way to get himself out of the car - as soon as he was far enough away he struggled, eventually falling out of the guard's arms and down to relative safety. Charley's dog, Sacra, alongside a maid from the household, find him and bring him back to the house. There, he explains things to both Charley and Johnny.

Harold says that he thinks he has been kidnapped by his father - he was scared about what he had planned so he escaped and ran away. Johnny tells him that he should contact the police, but Hal admits that there's only one policeman he can trust. When Charley and Johnny leave the room, Johnny tells his partner that there's something odd about the boy - that he's not a vampire, but he gives him a special feeling. Charley asks Johnny to let the boy say, and he seems to agree.

Later, whilst Hal and Charley are talking, the boy admits that he hates his father. He says that he never gets to see his dad, and that he spends all his time making 'weird drugs'; Hal doesn't understand what goes through his father's dead. It's at this point that Johnny leaves the house, leaving Charley with nothing more than a note. Charley soon finds out that Johnny is in danger (see: Barry) but is reluctant to leave Hal alone - the boy objects, however, telling his new friend that he should go to his friend.

While Charley is away, Harold phones the police officer, Craig. He tells the man that he is safe and that he will contact him later before hanging up. It's revealed that Craig is investigating Hal's father; after being told to stop he hands in his badge - it's revealed that he has a nameless man in his apartment who he offers to trade for the whereabouts of Hal's father.

Charley returns to Hal's side after Johnny disappears - Hal continues to feel guilty that, because Charley was looking after him, Johnny was hurt. Charley takes him into a church and asks if he finds entering churches to be difficult - the boy responds that no, he doesn't, misinterpreting the question as being about his chair.

Charley has a minor memory-ping, recalling that when he first saved Harold the boy had papers - one of which had the word 'Vassalord' on it. Hal tells Charley that those papers were his father's, and he'd been told to show them to Father Mailer, the priest that had been in charge of the congregation at the church before. It's at this point that Craig arrives, accusing Hal of lying - he reveals that Hal was involved in the trade of the drug named 'Vassalord'. Craig tells him to stop playing the victim and take responsibility for what he's done. Hal bursts into tears, saying that his father told him the drug could cure illnesses - instead of doing that, however, the people given the drug died.

Craig says that he's continuing to search for Hal's father's location, going to Italy to do so. Hal protests, saying that he should forget about his father: finding Alford isn't worth putting Craig in danger. When Craig says he'll be fine, as he has Charley with him, Hal says that he'll go too.

In Italy, Craig and Charley plan to infiltrate Yaoding's basement. Hal gives Charley his watch - it matches with his father's and it'd help them find Alford. Charley asks Hal to pray that the mission is a success. During the mission they find out that Alford has many houses and the prisoner doesn't know where he is. It's revealed that Alford believed that 'to die is to rest', and that 'immortality is no paradise'. They were scared when they desired blood, but they couldn't kill themselves because it's a cardinal sin. The drug was an experiment to increase their numbers, but the intentions behind it, on Alford's part, are unknown. It's said that Alford is beautiful, 'like an angel'.

Charley then returns to Craig and Hal and Charley relays what happened during the mission. Hal admits that the one thing he knows littlest about is his father's appearance, as whenever he saw him he hid his face - and that no one has seen what he looks like. He seems upset that he knows so little about his father, which strikes a nerve with Cherry, who knows very little about Johnny. After a broadcast on the radio gives the group a new lead, they go to the Vatican where Hal and Craig are placed in Charley's personal rooms. Hal then spots Reverend Mailer.

In Charley's rooms, Craig and Hal talk about things, and Hal states that he had to go and show Mailer the documents; in a flashback the scene with the documents are shown and Mailer tells him, just like Craig, that he's a very skilled liar. Hal knocks out Sacra and escapes, telling Craig that there's something that he could do - asking Mailer to take him to his father.

personality: Hal comes across as a normal, happy child. On first appearances he is presented as being polite and innocent - his disability aids the helpless look he’s got going on. Still, there’s a lot more to the child than first meets the eye.

Although he shows himself to be a generally meek child, Harold has a great deal of determination. He proves that he wants to do his best to sort of the situation he has gotten into thanks to his father - going as far as to literally jump out of a man’s arms to escape. He’s also determined to do whatever he can to help Craig and Charley - he goes to Italy with them, and gives Charley his watch (which matches his father’s) as an aid. Even though he’s still a young child, Hal shows that he is brave and determined.

Even so, he also proves himself to be rather reckless. In his determination to take responsibility for the things he’s done the boy knocks out his sort-of guardian’s dog and escapes, handing himself over to a man that is probably extremely dangerous. He seems, at least at this point, to have little concern for his own safety; he wants to do what he thinks is best in order to take responsibility for the things he’s done. Though this is something good within the child it leads to him being far closer to danger than someone his age should be.Hal has also shown himself to be very trusting in people - he trusts Charley rather a lot, considering how little they seem to know about each other.

Even so, he has issues with the police; he says that the only police officer he can trust is Craig, who is, in fact, investigating his father. Though this lacking trust in the police department could indicate that the boy doesn’t trust all that many people, his relationship with Charley indicates otherwise - he tells the man his secrets and the things he knows of his father and wants to do whatever he can to help him. Harold seems to trust people explicitly, just having that trust falter somewhat where the police are concerned.

As though it weren’t obvious, Harold has some serious father issues. He frequently states how much he hates his father and the things he’s done (and what he gets tied up in because of it) and is doing everything he can to help Charley and Craig track him down. As if having Hal deliver paperwork and drugs to people who are ill wasn’t enough (telling the boy that the drugs would make them better) Harold’s father has never shown his face to his son; he always covers it up. It’s obvious that Hal’s father issues have damaged him somewhat and he finds it difficult to manage to talk about his father and the role he’s played in his father’s schemes. It’s also indicated that Hal is probably a good liar and hides being a face of being a victim.

Craig has scolded him for ‘playing the victim’ and telling convincing lies, which Hal seems shocked about; as his face is ‘so genuine’ when he tells a lie he’s probably more than used to being believed. Still, he did lie - and he did look believable whilst he did so. Hal essentially lied about being a drug trader for his father and would probably have been believed, if it wasn't for Craig knowing better.

Hal seems to have more to him that we would first expect; also he is consistently polite and caring (especially to those he trusts, such as Charley and Craig) his past has proven that he has a darker side to his rather innocent character that indicates lies and illegality that he would probably want to keep hidden; how deep this dark side goes, however, is questionable.

sample journal entry: [ A small, frightened voice comes across the line. ]

Hello? Is... Is this where Reverend Mailer took me? I'm not really sure where I am...

[ Another pause. The voice turns hopeful, in a sort of childish way - as a voice does when they desperately want something that they think isn't possible. ]

Maybe... Did Mister Charley find me? No, no, he had to find Mister Rayflo. I... I took responsibility, I did-! I'll wait for Reverend Mailer. I-I don't want to be trouble.

[ There's a quiet rolling sound, the movement of wheels, before a soft sigh, and the voice feed clicks off. ]
