Stargate SG-1...

So for years I've had friends who love the hell out of this show and really wanted me to get into it. I resisted the urge because Stargate the original film is one of my favorite films and I almost never see a show end up better than the movie when the movie is the latter created. So I finally managed to watch the first season on Hulu and the 2nd season on a chinese site. Already into the 3rd season.

You'd think by now having watched so much of it, I'd be a hard core fan. But I'm kinda not. I'm having a love hate relationship with this show and a lot of it simply because I held the film so dear to my heart for so long. Obviously this has a great deal to do with budget cuts affecting certain things. But other's are simply casting calls or things I don't understand being changed for no (apparent) reason. I'm sure the hardcore folks will have answers or rebuttals to these, but here's my feelings on the show.

Production Values - Obviously the difference between a film and tv show there's going to be some budget cuts. I.E. The Serpent Guards looking more like Pez Dispensers rather than the epic guards in the movie.

Speaking English...EVERYWHERE - Really? I mean...really?

Jack O'neill vs Jack O'neil - This one bothered me to start with. MacGuyver vs. Kurt Russell. No competition. Kurt Russell's character was a disciplined yet tortured man slowly and reluctantly climbing back toward the light. He also was a soldier you believed would win campaigns. Mac O'neill is a goofball and the furthest thing from Military condition I can imagine without moving into fattyville. In any case. I managed to overcome this severe dislike of the new character by convincing myself after a few episodes that he is actually Jack O'Neil's younger brother and their dad is a weirdo who named both his sons Jack. One's older and goofy and has taken over the SG mission after the initial Abydos mission in the film.

Sha're and Skaara - Why the shit did you need to change their names. I mean seriously.

Teal'c and his eyebrows - Okay lemme start with I love Teal'c...but by god his eyebrows...I truly feel they went overboard on their attempt at they Egyptian look and ended up with the largest drag queen I have ever seen. Plus your attention is pulled to them so often as half the time he's giving the Spock Brow.

The Goa'uld - I'm still trying to get past how much I hate the worms and the use of the Jaffa as incubators. It does make for compelling stories for certain. It's just so contradictory to the film since during his death, Ra's true form is seen. Not a worm/snake. Plus the concept that the Jaffa are incubators...meh I really really really really really really hate the effect they used for that.

The Jaffa physically not being that impressive. Ra's guard were all really big dudes who were fast, agile, dangerous and intimidating. Between most of the Jaffa I've seen on the show so far in three seasons, Teal'c and Hathor's buff lil incubator are the only ones that are impressive looking. I mean there was even an episode I watched where two Serpent guards were stepping up in ceremony and one of them was so absurdly small I was laughing very loudly at the Teeny Jaffa.

Anyhow. My hatreds over this show are outweighed by how much I do like the storylines and how well these characters interact. So I'm going to finish watching this series and move onto Atlantis and check out Universe when it comes out.

Thanks for dealing with my rant.
