i like to think of myself as a nice person. i like to do things day in and day out that make other people's lives a little bit easier, whether they realize it or not. being recognized isn't the payoff, it's more like what goes around comes around. and yet i find myself increasingly surrounded by people that i love and yet sometimes i cant but help ( Read more... )

nice is not the most important quality in a friend, I have found. If someone has genuine regard for you, they will show it in the most important ways, whether they are selfish or not. I think what's worse is when you think someone's really nice and they turn out to be a piece of shit that's good at acting - at least the selfish people are up front (and let's be honest, everyone's a bit selfish). as long as they're giving you what you truly need from them, recognizing basic reciprocity and not like treating you badly or blowing you off or being cold or whatever. I think selfishness is often looked at, unfairly, as a dealbreaker - like why are you friends with that girl, she's so selfish? but it's just one of many flaws and nobody's perfect. That said it's probably not a good idea to exclusively surround yourself with overtly selfish people WOW that was long.
