Summary: When a beautiful guy enters Tora's life, he's smitten. Unfortunately Shou has a secret and he doesn't want to share it
Hiroto lay on the cool grass, listening to the sounds of the river beside him. The warm spring sunshine shining over him.
He should have been in class, but he didn't do his homework and he was feeling lazy, so opted to lay out in the sunshine and take a little nap.
"There you are" He heard a voice say. He opened his eyes just enough to see who it was.
"Oh, hey Shou, class over already?"
"Yes it's over" Shou huffed, dropping his bag onto the younger's stomach, making him yelp.
"You didn't show up again, I had to work on my own again" He sulked "I can't finish the project on my own Hiroto" He sat down next to his friend.
Hiroto simply grinned and poked his cheek.
"Don't be like that Shouuuuu, it's no fun when you're moody"
With a sigh, Shou lay down next to him. Resting his head on his arms .
"Well then help me out Pon, start coming to class more" he pouted "Entrance exams start next semester, you really need to work hard now"
"I know I know, I'll start studying at some point, I'm just having fun for the moment"
The elder just shook his head, Hiroto was always like that, reckless, lazy, had no plans for the future other than having fun and he envied that more than anything.
He himself already had his life planned out, he was currently living with his elderly grandmother as his father left before he was born and his mother was in prison. So as soon as he graduated from school he would move out and go to collage to study music and law. He knew it would be hard work, but he also knew that it'd be worth every second of grueling study. Whereas Hiroto simply decided to go to collage and study music and see where life took him from there. He wished that Shou didn't study quite so much, pretty much every second of his life was spent hunched over books and he had to practically drag him out of the house to have a little bit of fun.
"Well just promise me you'll work hard Pon, you're smart so I want you to do well"
Hiroto groaned "Okaaay, I promise. Can we not be boring now and go have some fun?"
Shou smiled and rolled onto his best friend, laughing as he whined.
"Yes, but can got get your fat ass off me"
The two of them ended up at Hiroto's house playing video games all night, laughing and just chilling out. Eventually Shou went home and Hiroto retired to bed. A good night for the both of them.
The next day at school however, something was off. Hiroto actually decided to go to class for once, but Shou was missing. He sighed and put it down to the elder sleeping through his alarm, after all he left Hiroto's place at 3am.
It was only after lunch when the brunette finally slipped into class, looking less than his happy self. He had dull circles under his eyes and his uniform was a mess.
As soon as the lesson finished, he turned towards Shou.
"Hey" He said softly, gaining his attention "Are you okay?"
The elder stayed quiet for a moment, brows furrowing. "I..I..I don't know"
"What's wrong?"
He didn't respond, just staring ahead with a sad expression.
"Shou?" he frowned "what happened?"
With a shaky breath, Shou's eyes met his, then quickly looked away.
"M..my grandmother, She died last night" He spoke quietly "I got home and when I went into the living room, she was sat in her chair, when I shook her to wake her up, she was so cold and she didn't respond"
Hiroto was shocked, he never imagined for a second that Shou was late because of that, he felt bad for almost being pissed off at him.
"I don' know what to do Hiroto, She's still at home in her chair" He cried. The younger crouched in front of him and wrapped his arms around him, pulling him close.
"What am I going to do?"
The blonde didn't even wait for school to finish before he dragged Shou out of the building and walked with him back to the house.
Just looking at his face, he knew that his friend was too scared to go inside, but he had to face the reality at some point.
Taking his hand, Hiroto slowly unlocked Shou's front door and lead him inside. He went straight into the living room, Shou however lingered in the door way for a moment, Looking completely lost. Eventually he took a step into the room. Slowly walking over and sitting on the floor at his Grandmother's feet.
Hiroto decided to call the authorities to have the body removed as Shou was clearly to head fried to do it himself.
He looked over from the kitchen doorway, Sighing at the sight of Shou sat infront of her, hugging his knees and gazing at her intently, as if trying to spot any sign of life. Truly a tragic sight.
He held the brunettes hand as his grandmother's body was escorted from the house, he stayed to support him while he was being questioned and he packed a bag for him, taking him back to his house. After all, he wasn't about to let him stay there alone.
Hiroto rang the school the next morning and they were excused from classes for the rest of the week. Shou wasn't happy about it, he complained about falling behind on his studies and about the upcoming exams.
Hiroto would often find him hunched over one of his books at the table, asleep. He'd prize the book from under him and replace it with a cushion, throwing a blanket around him for good measure.
It was a Monday when they returned to school again, Aki greeted them with a huge smile, giving them the notes he had taken during their absence.
The two of them fell back into the class routine pretty quickly, thought it didn't stop Hiroto from being distracted. However he wasn't about to let that stop him from trying to work.
By fifth period, he was fully focused. So much so, that he didn't even notice his best friend's head loll forward.
"What the hell?" One of the girls cried, breaking Hiroto's concentration. He looked over at her and gasped. Shou was slumped to the side, convulsing and twitching, he suddenly slipped from his desk and landed on the floor.
The entire class watched in shock, Hiroto jumped up from his seat and knelt beside him.
The teacher was quick to join him aswell.
"Someone call for an ambulance" He demanded as he quickly took off his jacket, folded it up and placed it under Shou's head.
Eventually he stopped fitting, but as Hiroto soon realized, the worst was yet to come.
The more conscious he became, the more the pain in his chest burnt and grew. He tried to grit his teeth in hopes that it would pass, but he couldn't suppress the strangled sobs that wracked from his lips.
"Kohara-Kun" The teacher soothed "Where does it hurt?"
Shou could only point to his chest and spit out the word "Heart"
The whole class stared over in shock, feeling helpless as they sat in their seats. Hiroto grasped onto his hand, feeling the most helpless. What could he do though?
All he could do was watch as Shou writhed in agony and hope like hell that the ambulance wouldn't be too long.
The paramedics sedated Shou during the ride to the hospital. Leaving him in a state of uncontiousness once again. He was quickly rushed off the second they arrived at the hospital, so Hiroto found himself being directed towards a waiting room. What on earth was happening? Why was everyone running around, he didn't understand. He knew that Shou used to suffer the odd epileptic fit every now and then when he was younger, but he never seemed in that much pain, it made him feel sick. What the fuck was wrong.
He paced up and down the room until he physically couldn't stand up any longer, why was no body talking to him?
Frustrated tears flowed down his face as he slumped into a chair.
It was a number of hours before one of the doctors came to him, filling him in on every gruesome detail, making the situation even more grim.
"Can I see him?" Hiroto asked, finally raising his head to look at the doctor.
"He's currently resting up in ICU" The Doctor said softly "But if you're quiet you can stay with him"
With that, the made their way to Shou's room. It was near sunset, the gentle rays of orange blanketed the room, basking it in a hue of calmness.
A stark contrast to the mess of tubes and wires creating a network over Shou's body on the bed. A soft but shrill beeping noise sounding out every few seconds. Shou himself looked like he was asleep, only grimmer, dark circles around his eyes and bruises covered his lips.
Hiroto slowly sat down beside him with a sigh. He ran a hand through his hair and looked over his friend, wondering exactly how much more shit could his life throw at him. He remembered all the hardships that he had endured during his high school years, being betrayed by his so called girlfriend, getting bullied and the recent passing of his grandmother. Now this.
Getting up from his chair, he went to the window, watching as the sun dipped below the horizon, pulling them into darkness. He could tell that it was going to be a long night.
The sun made it's reappearance again some hours later. Hiroto had downed nearly an entire cafe's worth of coffee and was now starting to cash, eyes drooping and head lolling forward every now and then.
"P-pon?" His ears perked hearing the almost inaudible groan.
"Shou" He said, gently taking his friends hand in his own "How are you feeling?"
"Like the living dead" Hiroto couldn't decided if he looked any better or worse now that he was awake. He still looked like a zombie and frail as a soggy tissue laced with pain, but his eyes still held a small bit of the charming shine they usually did.
"Do you want me to get you anything?" Hiroto asked, but Shou simply smiled and shook his head.
"Nah, I'm fine, you should get yourself a coffee or something"
The blonde snorted "Shou, If I drink any more caffeine, I think I'll explode and take out half of Japan while I'm at it" He laughed making Shou chuckle as well.
That afternoon, their teacher dropped by to see how Shou was doing, bringing with him a bag of sweets for the two teenagers to chomp on. Although due to lack of appetite, Hiroto ate most of them. He also informed Hiroto that he would have to return to school the following day, which he reluctantly agreed to after alot of protesting.
The week went by at a snails pace, slower than that even. School without his best friend there was almost unbearable. Sure Aki would talk to him during class, but at lunch his friends would drag him off somewhere, leaving Hiroto on his own. Playing his guitar down by the river with no one to sing the melody proved to be monotonous.
And the worst part was that everyday, he'd walk down the corridor and hear whispers of Shou's fit in the class room, and the rumors that accompanied it. He'd get mad and punch one of them in the face, or getting into fights just to shut them up. He didn't care what people thought of him, but he wasn't going to let people bad mouth his best friend, he was worth more than that.
The second the school bell rang he'd quickly run to the bike shed and cycle over to the hospital to spend a few hours with Shou, although sometimes he was sleeping, but Hiroto didn't mind, he'd just sit next to him, flicking through the pages of a magazine, admiring one of the guitarists of one of many popular visual kei bands, hoping that one day he would be in the glossy pages, having young aspiring musicians smiling at him.
It was when he arrived at the hospital on the following Tuesday when he was informed of Shou having a turn for the worse during the night. He practically ran to his room, finding him lay silently on the bed, eyes staring up at a blank TV, as if deep in thought.
There was a moments silence as he saw Hiroto stood in the doorway, before he sighed and gave a small smile.
"Pon, there's something we need to talk about" He said softly, causing Hiroto's stomach to knot. He slowly walked over and perched on the chair, looking so intently at his friend.
"The principal came over to see me today" He paused, fingers gently trailing over his IV "Apparently one of the doctors had called him before school and told him that I had another fit last night" Another sigh fell from his lips. "He came and told me that he think's it'd be best if I formally leave the school"
"What?" Hiroto snapped.
"He said he doesn't think I will be healthy enough to take the exams and that it'd probably be the best for me to just drop out"
"How is that for the best?" Hiroto yelled "How can simply dropping out help? This is bullshit" He blinked hard to try and stop his eyes from watering.
Shou averted his gaze, "I already signed the papers, as of now I no longer attend that school"
Hiroto couldn't stop the tears that fell from his eyes. Upset sobs spilling from his lips. He covered his face with his arm in an attempt to hide but it made no difference.
Shou, needless to say was shocked, he'd never seen his little friend cry before, so seeing him crying uncontrollably was a little scary.
"Hiropon, please don't cry" He said taking his hand. "It's not a big deal"
"Yes it is" He cried "I hate going to school without you, Last week was hard enough but now I have to be alone for the rest of the year. I thought we were gonna study for the exams together and pass and then party when we got good grades and go away to celebrate our graduation, but we can't do that now can we?"
Shou gently stroked the back of his hand with his thumb to comfort him, "I'm really sorry Pon. I'll still be able to see you after school though"
"That's not the same" He frowned "I don't want to go if you're not there"
without warning the brunette hunched over, coughing roughly almost choking. After a moment he fell back onto the bed, panting. His bangs sticking to his sweaty forehead and eyes drooping ever so slightly. It was then that Hiroto saw just how bad his health was, realizing that he was acting like a spoilt brat and not putting Shou first.
"I'm sorry Shou" He whispered.
"It's okay" Shou panted, straining a smile "Just promise me that you'll do your best on the exams". Hesitantly Hiroto nodded, there was really nothing he could say to that.
When he was released from hospital, Hiroto had ordered Shou to stay with him at his family home. Shou had agreed but only until he found a place of his own, his Grandmother had left him plenty of money so he'd be able to pay rent and such, and he didn't want to be a burden to the Ogatas.
Many thoughts had gone through Hiroto's head during the passing weeks, mostly about study and exams, but there was one little thought that kept niggling away at his brain. That thought was Shou.
During the time they had spent living with each other, every meal, every accidental bump into each other when they passed the hall to get into the bathroom, every night when he watched the elder snuggle up on his camp bed, he realized that he felt something a little stronger than friendship.
But that could wait, he though as he was handed the envelope containing his exam results. He nervously opened it and pulled out the slip of paper. He had done his best and then some, studying during every free moment, he'd even pushed his guitar playing to one side so that he could got to the cram classes. Taking a deep breath he looked at his results.
He ran home as fast as he could with a huge grin on his face. He'd gotten nearly all A's, the best result he'd ever gotten.
"Shou!" He called as he closed his front door, making his way up to his room where he left Shou playing video games earlier that morning.
Upon opening the door however, he saw the game controller on the floor with the game paused, and Shou curled on Hiroto's bed fast asleep.
He smiled and perched down beside him. Feeling his heart flutter a little, he could deny it to everyone else, but he couldn't lie to himself, he was in love, with his best friend. How cliche he thought. In an act of bravery he leaned down, softly placing his lips against Shou's.
The kiss lasted no longer than 3 seconds before he lost his bottle and pulled away. He didn't want Shou to catch him. After all, what Shou didn't know could only hurt Hiroto.

Author's Note; So here it is.. I wanted to give a small backstory of these two, so that you guys understand them a little more.
Writing this made Hiroto grow on me so much >W< I know this seems possibly a little rushed, but I found this so hard to write. So I hope it doesn't sound bad.
Also, I wonder if any of you saw that coming, Poor Hiroto~
