It was a warm spring afternoon, bright sunshine and clear blue sky. The kind of day that 8 year old Saga and Shou loved to spend down by the river. They'd sit on the rocks next to the waters edge with a box of botamochi that Shou had handmade with the help of one of the care workers, telling stories of rock stars and far off places. It was Saga's favorite time of year, the dark gloomy winter had passed and summer was on its way.
The two young boys lived in a care home, along with thirteen other children. They met at the tender age of five years old and had been inseparable ever since. They would often sneak into each others rooms long after their bedtime and spend hours talking, until they were busted by a tired and pissed off care worker. Not that a telling off ever stopped them, The two were like peas in a pod, if you saw one of them then the other was never too far away.
Foster care had been particularly difficult for Shou. He was three when his mother had dumped him on the doorstep of the care home. Wrapped in a newspaper and screaming his little heart out. He had cried for the best part of a week, day and night, simply too young to understand what was going on. He just wanted his mummy back.
The staff found him difficult to deal with, they soon learned that his behavioral problems could not be tamed by the promise of TV time and sweets. They had particular trouble when it came to meal times and bed time, he would eat a mouthful and then protest that he was full and he just flat out refused to go to sleep. Often resulting in him being taken to the TV room by one of the workers, and watching TV until he drifted off long enough for them to carry him back to his room.
Ultimately he wasn't a bad child, he was just lonely. Being the youngest he often found himself playing alone, as the other children didn't want him to join their games. His loneliness made him difficult, and after two years the staff began to lose hope.
That was, until the day a new child had entered the home.
Shou crept around outside of the office, trying to steal a glance at the newcomer. However he was soon escorted to the main room where the rest of the children were. Sitting himself in the corner with his bear, watching as the other children played together- The girls giggling over on the far side of the room, and the rest of the boys playing a board game in the middle.
It was about an hour later when the doors opened, the head care worker- Masuda, entering with a small boy, roughly Shou's age. He had dark eyes and soft features, giving off a friendly vibe that made Shou feel excited, perhaps he was finally going to make a friend in this place.
"This is Sakamoto Takashi" The Masuda announced cheerfully "He'll be staying with us from now on so please treat him nicely".
To Shou's disappointment, She then led the newcomer to the group of boys in the center of the room before she left.
He sighed heavily turning away and hugging his bear tight. Silent tears rolling down his little cheeks.
"Why are you crying?" A quiet voice asked next to him. He turned away as furiously wiped at his eyes.
"I'm not crying" He sniffed "I just have something in my eyes"
"How come you're not playing with your friends?"
"I don't have any friends" He sighed, holding his bear tighter.
Takashi sat down next to him with a smile and patted him on the shoulder. Making Shou look over at him hesitantly.
"Well, I don't have any either, why don't we be friends? You can call me Saga" He smiled
From that moment on, they were inseparable.
Saga had taken to living in a care home rather nicely. Unlike Shou, he had been prepared and was old enough to understand what was happening.
His parents hated each other, constantly fighting and screaming at each other. They had given birth to Saga in a futile attempt to save their failing marriage, but after nearly four years of clinging to the fraying threads, it had inevitably come to an end. They both remarried and had their own new families, Saga simply didn't fit into either. There had been numerous fights about who would be burdened with the baggage of their broken romance before it was finally decided that he would be sent to a care home.
In the end, Saga didn't mind. He'd been palmed off on his parents and raised in a household filled with confrontation and anger, not receiving a single shred of affection. No environment for raising a child.
So moving to a place filled with smiles and friendly faces, where he was given lots of attention and support.
And of course, living with his best friend in the world made him feel happier than he ever felt with his parents.
Saga smiled as he rode his bike down to the river, Shou riding just behind him as the sunshine drifted down through the trees.
It was one of those lovely spring afternoons, a crisp breeze blowing gently against his skin, clear blue sky and birds singing a sweet melody. One of those lazy days that made you so carefree.
They parked their bikes against an old tree and sat atop some rocks on the river bank. Saga thought that Shou's home made botamochi tasted better when they ate together in this place. It was their secret place, where they could talk and play without being told off for being too boisterous.
Shou lay back and looked up at the sky happily.
"Saga, do you think we'll still be able to play together when we get new families?" He asked nonchalantly.
"Of course" Saga grinned as he shoveled another botamochi into his mouth "I'll come and see you every weekend and then we can have proper sleepovers and watch movies and eat candy without the other kids butting in"
"Do you think we'll go to the same schools?"
"Yep. We'll be in the same class and sit next to each other just like we do now. It'll be fun"
Shou heisted as he sat up to face him again.
"We'll be friends forever... right?"
"Forever and ever!"
He held out his pinky finger with a bright smile "Do you promise?"
Saga linked Shou's pinky with his own and laughed "I promise"
That had been the very last spring they had spent together. Close to Shou's birthday, Saga had been adopted. Welcomed into the arms of a sweet young couple who were unable to have children of their own. They had showered him with love and made him feel happier than he ever thought imaginable. They made sure that he was well brought up and never wanted for anything. He couldn't have wished for a better family.
The only down side was that he and his foster parents lived in the city, a long car journey away from the care home. Making it difficult for them to find time for him to visit Shou.
So as time passed, they lost touch and the image of Shou's face faded from his mind.
He wondered whatever became of the other boy.
Sun shone down on the city streets as Saga rode his bike down the road. He was now 25 and worked as a director for a small film company. It wasn't the best paying job but dammit, he was happy and that was what was really important.
A smile graced his lips as he reminisced about that spring by the river seventeen years ago, He hand't thought about it for the longest time.
"Look out!"
Saga snapped from his thoughts to see a person right in his path. He wasn't fast enough to reach, slamming straight into them and sending them to the ground. Rolling over twice before coming to a halt.
With a groan he cracked an eye open. Realizing that he was laying on top of the stranger, limbs tangled and noses touching.
"Shit" He cursed, quickly sitting up a little "I'm so sorry. Are you okay?"
The other let out a pained cough as he opened his eyes "Yeah, I'm fine"
"Fuck, Your head is bleeding" Saga cried "Do you want me to take you to the hospital?"
"No, No it's fine. I've done worse" He said looking up at him before a breath caught in his throat. "Holy shit... Saga?"
Saga stared at him with a small frown. Something about the stranger was familiar, but he couldn't place his finger on it.
That was until he looked into those brown eyes. Everything suddenly came rushing back to him in a heartbeat.
"Oh my god, Shou?" He gasped, completely dumbfounded. Of all the people in Japan, he happened to crash into his old friend.
"I haven't seen you in years, how have you been?" He asked, causing Shou to laugh.
"I think it'd be better if we conversed somewhere a little quieter, perhaps somewhere where we aren't laying in the middle of the road?"
"Oh.. right , Of course" Saga heaved himself up and outstretched a hand to his old friend, pulling him to his feet.
After locking his slightly trashed bike around the nearest lamp post, Saga took Shou to a small coffee shop around the corner. Ordering their drinks and sitting in two plush armchairs in the window. Saga had taken the time to clean up the gash on Shou's head, mopping the slither of blood that had trailed between his eyes before seating himself opposite him.
Shou looked so different, although that was a given after seventeen years. He dressed well, tight jeans, shirt and vest combo and smart looking sneakers. His hair was a warm shade of auburn that accented his pale complexion nicely. The only thing that remained the same was his eyes, they still shined as bright as they did when they were kids.
"So" Shou began, throwing a leg casually over the other as his delicate hands cradled his coffee cup "Apart from plowing down poor unsuspecting pedestrians with your bicycle, what are you up to these days?"
"I'm a director" Saga smiled "At the moment I'm filming a documentary about underground music. It's cool"
"Sounds amazing. You must really enjoy it." He paused to sip his coffee "So tell me, what was life like after leaving the care home?"
It was Saga's turn to smile, he always felt genuinely happy when he thought about his foster parents, they were the nicest people he had ever met. Continuing to support him even now.
"It was better than I could imagine, The couple that adopted me are lovely. They really made me look at the world in a more positive light. They even paid for me to go to one of the best universities in Tokyo. I guess I got lucky" He beamed, causing Shou to return the gesture. "So what about you? What happened to you after I left? I bet you got adopted by a well off family"
The auburn haired shifted slightly, eyes flitting between the beverage in his hands and Saga.
"Actually I didn't get adopted at all" He said sheepishly "I guess when you get past a certain age, nobody wants to be burdened by you. So I stayed at the home until I was eighteen. Then Masuda set me up with an apartment and helped me look for a job before I left.
So y'know.. I worked in an office for awhile and got some money together, then one day just decided to go to France."
"Really?" Saga cut in "You went to France?"
"Yeah, I went to a small town called Figeac. It was so beautiful there, lovely community. I ended up falling in love with a guy called Lionell, moved in with him and got a job at a small bakery. But then after two years Lionell and I broke up and I decided to come back to Japan. Since then I've been working at the care home, teaching the kids about cooking, art and french."
Saga could only stare at him, mouth gaping open rudely. Shou didn't seem to mind though, simply laughing and punching him playfully on the arm.
"Do you wanna catch flies or are you gonna close your mouth?"
"Sorry" Saga mumbled, hiding his blush behind his coffee cup before turning to his old friend with a grin "I'm just impressed. Despite not having the best childhood, you've really grown up and made a life for yourself. You're so cool" He paused and smirked "It's also good to hear that I'm not the only boy from the home that's of the cock loving persuasion"
Shou almost died laughing. Clutching his knees as his shoulders shook.
"Have you ever thought of being a poet Saga?" He sniggered.
They remained like that for a good portion of the afternoon, sat in the window drinking coffee, talking the day away.
After all, seventeen years was a long time, they had a lot to catch up on.
It was only when the staff were ready to close the shop. So they decided to take a stroll along the quiet streets.
Despite nearly two decades of being apart, Saga felt like they had never been separated. His body and his experiences may have changed, but Shou was still the same person he had met all of those years ago. Still thoughtful and filled with ambition.
A small breath exhaled from his lips in exasperation, his feet coming to a stop as he looked at the other who raised a brow.
"Shou" He said quietly, the words getting stuck in his throat "I'm really sorry for leaving in that damn home all those years ago. I should've come back to visit more. I guess I was just caught up in my new life with my family. God I'm so fucking selfish"
Shou's expression melted into one of empathy.
"You shouldn't apologize for finding happiness. Nor should you feel bad about it. I was really pleased for you" He replied "Anyway, I was okay on my own, sure I missed you like fucking crazy and hoped to god that I would get to see you again, even if it was just for a second. But knowing that you were happy and making others happy too.. that was all that mattered"
"But I just abandoned you, how can you be okay with that?"
The other slumped his shoulders, looking at him with melancholy eyes. Stepping back just a fraction, as if barricading himself within invisible walls.
"Because I got used to it. I got used to people erasing me from their lives, my mother did it, all of those potential foster parents that promised to take me out again did it, and then you did. And I wouldn't be surprised if, as soon as we part, you disappear again" A stray tear rolled down his pale cheek, which was wiped away by Saga who stepped closer to him so that their bodies were mere inches away.
He took Shou's hand and gave it a gentle squeeze.
"I'm not going to disappear again Shou. Finding you again feels like I've found my other half and I don't intend on letting you go. I'll never abandon you ever again"
Slowly, the gap between their lips became smaller and smaller until it was no existent. Soft lips joined in a shy yet warm kiss. Their fingers lacing so delicately.
Shou could feel his heart beating out of his chest, feeling as if the butterflies in his stomach had taken a good shot of caffeine and were trying to get out.
Those seventeen years fading away into nothing. Time could never tear them apart.
Saga roused from his slumber with a yawn. feeling stiff after a night sleeping on the couch. But then he heard a tired hum and couldn't suppress the smile that lit up his face. Shou's head resting on his chest, legs tangled with his own.
They had gone back to Saga's apartment where they had spent the entire night talking, laughing and kissing. Savoring the taste of each other on the tip of their tongue.
Things hadn't yet progressed to sex. But then, making love was an art, you couldn't just rush head first into it. Sex was the reward for working hard... or at least that's how Saga felt.
So the two had curled up on the couch and fallen asleep in the early hours of the morning.
"Morning" Shou hummed sleepily as he awkwardly rolled over to face him.
"Morning sunshine" He replied warmly, brushing auburn bangs from the elder's eyes "Did you sleep alright?"
"Like a corpse, who knew that being squished on a couch was so comfortable" Shou giggled.
It had been a while since he had woken up in somebody's arms, and Saga's arms were particularly welcoming.
He smiled fondly, pressing his lips to Saga's and feeling his heart flutter all over again. It was amazing to think that they had bumped into each other purely by chance. A slit second fragment of time that just so happened to place him in Saga's path, unable to brake in time.
He had never believed in fate before, but now..
Perhaps it did exist and he had never been so lucky.
"Thank you for crashing into me with your bike yesterday"

westcaterwaul (I hope this measures up to what you asked for).
How's that for 2 life stories summed up in a one shot eh? I rather enjoyed writing this, although I'm not totally happy with the ending. But no matter how many times I re-wrote it, I was still unhappy. Please excuse that.
Anywaaay, I hope you enjoyed it. I have a small sequel chapter planned, so I hope you enjoy that too ^^.
