The first time I met Chansung outside of the gym, it was mid-day, warm, and he took me to a water-front restaurant.
Over the course of the meal we shared, I learned that he liked to be outdoors. He liked rock climbing and hiking and most of all he liked being around water. His favorite hobby, he said, was surfing.
I had to laugh at that, because I wasn’t much of a water person. The things I liked to do outdoors were activities like basketball and running, and that was about it. Otherwise I was at a bookstore or a library or sitting under a tree writing my deep thoughts on some aged paper, because that’s the kind of romantic type I was.
He was all too fascinated and captivated by the things I told him about myself and after we ate, I agreed to go for a walk with him, enjoy the sunshine and the cool breeze of Spring that felt the need to flirt with Summer’s humidity.
It was a memory I would cherish forever. The easiness between us sparked something in me, invested something within my soul that I knew I didn’t want to let go of. There was a familiarity with Chansung that I had never felt with anyone else and it thrilled me to the very center of my being.
After spending just one afternoon with him, I was regretting the choice I made of judging him, mistaking him for just another guy. He was multi-dimensional, and I wished so much that I had spoken to him sooner, acknowledged him earlier.
I could only be glad that I didn’t ignore him, that I didn’t completely miss my chance, that he had been the one to approach me. After all, that’s the kind of romantic type I was.
