Key watched Taemin and Onew closely. It had been two weeks since they’d been stranded here, and he noticed the dynamic between the two had shifted.
He watched them search for coconuts, he watched them eat together, he watched them when they were swimming. Like a hawk. He had a feeling, a feeling about how the dynamic had shifted and what was going on, but he wasn’t for sure, completely.
He sat on the sand under a palm tree and watched the two as they sat next to each other and drew shapes in the sand before the water washed them away.
He heard sand shifting and looked up as Dongwoon sat next to him.
“Hey,” Key smiled at him.
“Hey, you looked lonely,” Dongwoon said.
Key shrugged a little, “Just bored, ready to be off of this island and back home. I keep hoping we’ll be found soon, but these cloudy days don’t really make for good search conditions.”
“That’s true,” Dongwoon agreed. “It can get pretty boring here.” Dongwoon leaned back on his hands and stretched his legs out in front of himself, crossing them at the ankles. “But I do find the quiet very relaxing compared to the city.”
“It is a nice break.”
They were quiet for a while.
“So tell me about you and Jonghyun,” Dongwoon said.
“What about us? There’s not much to tell.”
“The way you two interact isn’t like any couple I’ve ever seen before. It’s awkward sometimes.”
Key looked at the red-head next to him and sighed. “We just got back together recently. It was a mess.”
Dongwoon was quiet for a while before he responded. “I guess that would do it,” he nodded. Key smirked.
“It did,” he assured. “But hopefully things are better now. At least they will be until we get back home, where he’ll be faced with choices to make and then everything will blow up again and we’ll be back in this mess like we were before.”
“Choices?”
“He cheated,” Key said. “So when we get back home, it’s up to him whether to run back to her or stay with me like he promised. To be honest, I’m sure he’ll go back to her, but…I love him so much, I’m desperate for this that we have right now.”
“So he’s bi?”
“Apparently so…and what about you? Why aren’t you shocked that he and I are together?” Key asked, eyes narrowing slightly.
Dongwoon chuckled and sat up again. “Have you seen yourself?” he asked. “Who wouldn’t want to be with you?” Key rolled his eyes and Dongwoon laughed again. “I’m serious.”
“Well thank you, but really, it’s tiring hearing that all the time.”
“Well how often has someone admitted that they waited until you were alone while you were hunting coconuts to talk to you and try to put moves on you?”
Key just looked at him with a slightly gaping mouth and wide eyes. “Never, it would be a first to hear it.”
“Well you just heard it,” Dongwoon said.
“Too bad you weren’t a day earlier,” Key grinned.
Dongwoon groaned. “I knew I should have talked sooner, I’m always too late.”
“One day you’ll be on time for someone,” Key chuckled.
Dongwoon let out a long sigh, “That’s what they all say.”
~
“Are you jealous?” Key smirked. Jonghyun gave him an incredulous look.
“O-of course I’m not jealous,” he scoffed. “He’s a kid.”
“Right, so this whole conversation about me possibly cheating on you is absurd and honestly, I don’t appreciate it one bit. Have you forgotten who cheated on whom in this relationship, Jonghyun?”
Jonghyun merely looked at him for a few minutes as Key rattled on before sighing and looking off into the distance. He paused and tilted his head, grabbing Key’s forearm.
“What?”
“Shh! Listen.”
Key sighed and listened. All he heard was water and birds. “I don’t hear anything.”
“Just listen,” Jonghyun said shortly, “It’s getting closer!” Jonghyun stood up and moved out from under the trees onto the sand. He walked out a way and looked up at the sky, all around, trying to spot what he was hearing. Key watched him for a minute before he caught a sound that didn’t fit with the rest and stood up also, running over to Jonghyun’s side and looking around with him.
“There!” Jonghyun said, pointing to the west.
Key was speechless. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing nor did he want to. He didn’t want it to be a dream. He didn’t want to wake up if it was a dream.
The helicopter was so close, but looked so far away. A few of the others started running out onto the shore as well, some already flailing to get the pilot’s attention. Key was gripping Jonghyun’s arm and didn’t know it and Jonghyun didn’t bother to tell him, because he needed Key clinging to him to erase his fears about that Dongwoon guy.
Key watched with bated breath, praying that the helicopter would come closer and when it was, when it was getting closer to them, more clear, louder, Key dropped to his knees and started crying.
Maybe they would finally be rescued, maybe they could go home, maybe they could live their lives again. Lives together, happy lives that included refrigerators, showers and beds.
He only wished Minho were here with them. He wished Minho could be with them period. Forever.
