(Just for the record, a lot of this comes from head canon -- we are given precious little information about Shuraiya [though, I would like to point out, he gets a great deal more character development than most OP movie characters], but I've striven to keep my assumptions about the One Piece world and him as accurate to canon as possible.)

1. Shuraiya's home island is Bascùd Island -- that name is familiar, isn't it? That's because his family owned both it and the ship building business that supported the local economy.

2. Shuraiya was going to inherit said business and eventually become a ship builder himself.

3. When he was twelve, the traitor General Gasparde (a former Marine who commandeered a steamship that was in port at Bascùd Island) and his crew plundered his home island, utterly destroying everything -- only one hundred people were left alive after the attack.

4. This is what spurred Shuraiya's hate for pirates -- to him, they do nothing but destroy the lives of the innocent. The Great Age of Piracy is both a joke and a moral offense to the bounty hunter; what has it accomplished, other than a rise in crime? Nothing.

5. Despite having become an 'official' bounty hunter by way of the World Government, Shuraiya spent the next few years bumming around the Grand Line until he racked up the courage to actually kill a pirate and make a name for himself as a bounty hunter.

6. The reason he never joined the Marines is because Shuraiya has a problem with working with others, and authority as well. Despite having respect for the Marines, he knows they are as corrupt as the pirates are -- that, and they treat him like shit for being a dog of the Government. However, he did enjoy a brief stint during his first stay at DDD working under James Norrington in the British Royal Navy -- it's a pity we never went into this, but he basically commissioned a uniform and joined illegally, tagging along on missions. Yay. XD

7. That said, Shuraiya has a very low opinion of himself; he is confident and brazen, but at the same time, he cares little for his own well-being -- he is surviving only so he can find Gasparde and kill him, or die trying.

Okay, enough of the angsty crap.

8. Shuraiya has a fighting style that is unique to, well, all of One Piece -- he has no Devil Fruit power nor any expertise in swordsmanship; instead, he takes advantage of both his opponents and his environment to win his battles -- you know what? I'm going to give you guys a Youtube video, it illustrates his style much better than I ever could.

See what I mean? Another thing I love about him is that he enjoys fighting -- it's fun.

9. If any of you are familiar with One Piece (which is, what, one or two of you?), you're familiar with Luffy's bottomless stomach; Shuraiya is the same way. He eats a ton. I think it's because he doesn't really get to eat that often, and when he does, well~

10. A random tidbit from DDD canon: he loves jelly and jam. I don't even know why, but he does. XD

11. Considering the life span of an average pirate on the Grand Line, Shuraiya is more or less an adult -- does that make sense? In any case, he was forced to become one at a young age, but he is, after all, only nineteen at this point, so he does act like a teenager when his guard is down.

12. Continuing on that vein, Shuraiya has major mood swings. He'll be yelling and pissed off at you one minute, then laugh it off and not even care the next.

13. This next one isn't so much about Shuraiya himself, but I thought it would be pertinent to mention that he is one of the few movie characters who Oda actually drew himself -- this is rare, as far as I know.

NO I DON'T KNOW WHY HE GAVE HIM PINK HAIR. XD

14. Again with the factoids that are not so much about the character himself, but associations -- you guys have probably noticed that I'm big on music (having a character like Apollo, how can I not be?), and two songs in particular that I've come to associate with Shuraiya are This Boy by Franz Ferdinand, and Fearless by The Bravery. Check them both out, they are definitely worth a listen! (And a watch, particularly Fearless -- if you think dancing on treadmills is impressive, wait until you see Sam Endicott sing on a motherfucking speedboat.)

Wow, this entry is really becoming multimedia!

15. The bounty hunting system I set up for Shuraiya is made up of canon and non-canonical aspects -- I wanted him to be a 'legal' bounty hunter, so I came up with the idea of there being both men running around the Grand Line, killing pirates for petty cash and there also being legitimate bounty hunters who work for the World Government and have a file at the Marine bases, which is consulted when bounties are claimed.

16. I figure the Marines don't fancy Shuraiya all that much, because one, he is obviously good at what he does (why else would he have gotten a name like "the Pirate Executioner"?) and because he typically kills his prey on the spot, rather than bring them in to have a public execution. He doesn't like his hard work being usurped by the Marines, even at the cost of a 30% drop in bounty.

17. I honestly have no idea what Shuraiya does with all the money he earns as a bounty hunter -- it is evident that he has very little on his person; all he carries in the movie is a crappy brown duffel bag. A good deal of it probably goes towards food, and the rest? I have no clue. XD

18. Shuraiya has never been back to Bascùd Island since he left, seven years ago -- he can't stand to return, despite his inherited responsibility of it. Will he return eventually? We'll see.

19. Shuraiya is shockingly resilient in a fight; he can be thrown around and get the crap beaten out of him, but he will still get back up and keep going. There is a determination within him that does not allow him to be taken down by anyone. It's really impressive, to be honest.

20. Thanks to people like Jacky and Link, Shuraiya is slowly beginning to find the person in the pirate -- he has a severe prejudice against them, as I've said, so seeing that you can be a good person and a pirate is really... oh god, he's Will Turner. Excuse me while I go cut my heart out.
