He's funny, and that's a perk too, even if his name does make her think of a puppy she might have had in another life where things were...well. Something other than what they are. It's apt; he grins like a puppy too, and she gets the feeling that under it all he kind of wants to please her.
In some ways, that makes things more difficult. But they say 'go' and she says 'already gone,' and that's how things go.
"Lie down."
Maybe he would have anyway, but it's too late to ask.

"Mnn." The last house went black a few hours ago, but she's as calm as she's ever been, hands sliding dark over white stones and whiter bone, some fine as china, some heavy enough to be weapons.
This, you see, is important. Or it will be, where they're going.
Kevin bites his lip. "What do we do now?"
Her teeth flash in the darkness.

Donna doesn't catch his reaction, but she sure as hell notices it when he takes a step closer. She doesn't look at him, blowing smoke in the opposite direction.
"You're blackmailing me."
"Yep. Need the money."
Another step--and then he's on his knees and how can such a tiny woman be so damn strong, anyway? She puts her cigarette out under her boot and smiles down at him, sort of distantly. "I don't like this any more than you do, sugar. Difference is? When I get what I want, I'm gone. You just keep wanting."
She doesn't snap his wrist, but she makes sure he knows she could.
If she wanted to.

Nimble fingers flip over another empty thimble of glass, the wet slap on the wood of the bar muted through the buzzing in his head. She's still sober, and he's trying to hold on to what kind of circumstances brought him here, drinking with a child at the end of the world.
Nathan, you see, passed out of sobriety a while ago.
"What's wrong with my face?"
"You got that--" she gestures loosely around his jawline. "That big fuckin' scar."
Pause. "Oh, that." He's had too much to drink if he's telling anyone this, but really...who's left to tell? It's a thing you'd think he'd remember, but since then there have been other nights and there are other things at work here. His lashes flutter down and for a second there's a glimpse of the winning smile that got him so many votes. In another life ( ... )
