Take Me Out

Oct 18, 2004 23:16

I was all set to write a nice entry about baseball. I was at the game tonight--very exciting. The seats were phenomenal, right near the visitors' dugout. I was with my family, I had a foot-long hot dog, and I was happy. I was going to write about how I never get over walking into Fenway Park, climbing up that incline and seeing that great expanse ( Read more... )

To paraphrase Annie Savoy in Bull Durham, I believe in the church of baseball. I love the game, the traditions, going to the park with my dad and keeping my own scorecard. I was a Mets fan from birth and I don't care if they never win again because the Amazing team of '69 will keep my heart warm for the rest of my life. I don't follow them so much these days. In fact, I never really did -- my dad always told me how they were doing. I still take pride in being at Shea during Aguilera's rookie year, counting K's for Doc Gooden, and once I even saw Rusty Staub at bat ( ... )

I say to both of you: go to a *local* baseball game.

hungrytiger dragged myself and msmemory out to a Lowell Spinners game a little while ago, and it was remarkably refreshing. The event was about the community as much as it was about the game. It didn't have quite the same gladiatorial thrill one gets from MLB, but we didn't get covered in the metaphorical blood from the metaphorical lions, either.

Really, the big difference is that is was a genuinely *pleasant* outing. Local, friendly, good-hearted all around: very much the classic image of baseball. Goes a long ways towards restoring one's faith in the game, if not in the big-league version of it...

My parents were going to Bluefish games in Bridgeport for a while. Much nicer atmosphere and without the hassle and expense of going to a game at Shea.

I have really no excuse for not going to local games, especially since my cousin Greg plays in the Independent Leagues. He was with Brockton for a while last season.

I think the Yankees-Sox series are getting uglier each year.
Sadly, I suspect we are possibly more to blame than NY.
Of course, this is because they keep winning, but still,
The us versus them nature is fairly obnoxious.
Ira's grandmother, who lives in NY got him a Yankees cap & jacket.
It looks really cute, because 3 year olds look cute in uniforms.
I never will take him out in it, sadly.

But we can't be completely more to blame. You know the Yankees have their own series of rather awful Red Sox- Hating shirts right? It really isn't just us, even if we're the yankee-hatin underdog.

That said... I do get somewhat upset when people all out hate players like Matsui who is just doing his job. But I do hate A-Rod and Jeter and Clemens (I know, not a yankee, Sarah-Joy, get over it, I still hate him) for other reasons.

And Shana Babe.... if you keep F-ing as his middle name.... You're not fully over it. It'll come back, but you're ok. Get some sleep and stick to your work. It's ok if you don't get all worked up.

Oh, and sorry that was all in a response instead of an all-out new comment... I get carried away. :)

Shana: *hugs* here if you need me.

I've only been to one game at Fenway (Yankees, Sept. 24) and I was astonished and disappointed at the volume and decibel level of the constant booing for the Yankees. I know the Twins aren't exactly a major player, but that just doesn't happen where I come from.

I don't like the Yankees either, but I wasn't prepared for the negativity.

Um...as far as I know, you should be able to read those last few entries in my journal--you are on the appropriate list. Were you signed in at the time?
