I can't really put myself in your shoes -- I've never dealt with that tough a class. (Since I only teach at the club level, not in Real Schools.) But a couple of observations from the classes I have taught:

  • Getting loud rarely works in any rowdy class, but getting quiet often does. This works best if there are at least a couple of students who are trying to pay attention -- if the teacher stops talking and just does the "waiting slightly impatiently" look, it usually guilts a few of them into trying to get the rest to shut up.

  • The "shh" sound carries quite well, and contrasts nicely with hubbub. This is why I usually quiet things down using it.

  • While it usually isn't my style, an air of quiet, confident superiority is sometimes the best note to strike with a rowdy class. If you look insecure, you become sharkbait; if you come across as insecurely superior, you can simply look arrogant, which is even worse. But if you can convince yourself that you're good enough, that tends to carry outwards, and can help a lot in getting the class ( ... )
