I've been thoroughly wallowing in Charlotte MacLeod's Balaclava series (starting with Rest You Merry), which aren't quite Golden Age but do have something of that feel to them (plus a substantial dose of fun and/or silliness). You might like to try that one and see whether it's your thing?
I've been pondering those - mostly through noticing you mooching them! Are they a very series like series or could I start with one that wasn't the first and still enjoy it?
Hm... there's definitely continuity from one to another, but I think you could read them out of order so long as you didn't mind being potentially spoiled for developments in the earlier books (people getting married, or someone not being the murderer because they were around in the next book, or casual mentions of "that time when such-and-such happened). It's certainly not essential. Having said that, I really would start with the first book, because it sets up so much of the series.
You might also like the Andrew Greeley books I spent most of last year reading *g*, but his prose isn't always brilliant and his dialogue, particularly, tends to be, um, consistent across characters?
It's not one of your categories, but I just read a book I think you'd enjoy, which is sort of mystery-ish but not a detective story. It's called The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield.
