I have zero interest in how long someone has been vegetarian, it has never even occured to me to ask. It seems a strange thing to ask to be honest.
Vegetarianism is a binary thing for me, if I'm sharing a meal with someone, all I need to know is, vegetarian? Yes or no? How long for is of no interest.

I'm rather shocked by some of the intolerantly anti-vegetarian comments... I'd thought better of Guardian readers...

I doubt those people are Guardian readers. Comment is Free was recently described by Private Eye as "the exciting sister website which gives people who would not normally be seen dead buying The Guardian the opportunity to log on and insult their journalists free of charge."

FWIW, I didn't think the article was that great, but being an actual Guardian reader I didn't log on to say so.

Well you've restored my faith in Guardian readers, although I still have to despair of human nature more generally!

As the comments clarify, the "five readers" featured were the five who came forward. So they weren't chosen beforehand by the editor, they're just a sample of people who have a perspective on the issue and could be bothered to write 200 words on it. If a lifelong veggie had come forward, I suppose one would be featured.
