I'm clearly missing something. Google tells me this is a quote from Hunt for Red October, but (correct me if I'm wrong) I don't recall them fermenting vegetables on the sub.

More a reference to acts with lethal consequences than direct references to fermenting your cabbage, really.

Well, in my case it would be fermented cucumbers and fermented squash everywhere.

Thanks for the heads up though. I'm using canning jars so if there is gas build up I should see the upper sealing plate distend (hopefully) before disaster strikes.
