I'm working on compiling a list of Chicago cons, past and present, and I find I'm missing a lot of data. If anyone could provide accurate information, I'd appreciate it. Below is a listing of what I'm currently missing ( Read more... )

Then there was "FantasyCon", which happened once at a downtown hotel. I remember because we did a Moebius show there. If only I remembered more -- Gretchen says it was at the same hotel as Windycon 2.

Good grief, you're right. E_M_B and I think it was the Hotel Essex (which might have had a different name when it hosted Windy) and it was 1985 or 86. Todd Hamilton was a guest (fan, pro or artist I can't remember). "Good morning, Mister Warlock!"

Believe it or not, I found a reference to it here. Not much of a reference...

Peripheral to science fiction fandom, but an important sub-fandom for a while, the 1983 SubGenius Convention was held in Chicago, at the same time as the Worldcon, which is how I happened to go. Mentioned here.

Jennifer Stevenson chaired a literary convention in (I think) 1990 or 1991 (maybe both) called Chimera. Held at the Woodfield Hyatt. I'm gonna go nag a few friends to get more info.

Weren't there some big trekcons during the 70's?

Richard Chwedyk pointed out Chimera to me earlier this evening. He said it ran for two years, so 90 and 91 could very well both be right.

Congenial went pretty far afield. I recall it being in Kenosha and around Lake Geneva, so what's your cutoff for "Chicago?"

I've decided to include the Kenosha/Racine area for things like Congenial, but not for Gen Con. I'm including Cook and the Collar Counties.

Are you including all of the Creation cons?

Sure, the more the merrier.

Good luck with that. :-)

I'm sure they've run at least 50 Chicago cons in the last 30 years. Hmm...This will be tricky.

It seems that everything since 1999 is captured in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. They've had the same website since then (creationent.com). The tricky part is that Creation events often greatly change from the announcement to the actual event.
