Hello, Waiwode from Heirs of the Stolen Lands over on OP, here.
I have to agree whole-heartedly on Kingmaker NPCs. Especially with all the various offices the players require filled, they need a host of them available. if I could do it all again I would have made a bigger thing about the earlier arrivals and settlers.
Digression: The "best choice" list provided in the books is entirely inadequate, especially with a few of the not appearing until you explore RRR - after the book suggests you let them run their new kingdom form a year. And Akiros? The minute my group caught a glimpse of someone not in bandit-leather he was target #1.
We had a Technical Party Kill in a certain ruined Elven fort yesterday. The group were cautious, did nothing wrong, but every single one of them failed a save. Death seemed an inappropriate reward, and we ended up with a narrow chance for survival, that they seized. We ended up wi two characters a breath away from death and one exciting combat
( ... )
My group also had issues in that fort. They managed to trigger all of the encounters for a big melee. Their new best friend Rigg got away, much to general consternation. Heh. I keep (kind of) joking that all of their escaped enemies are going to ally into a horrid army and come marching into their capital.
And you're absolutely right. That "best choice" list was kind of silly. But Akiros survived and has actually ended up with a governing role in our country! He was far from being the first choice of the original party. The paladin of Iomedae was not amused by the fallen paladin of Erastil. But the new PCs mostly don't know or care.
I combined Sir Niklaus Sneeg and Akiros, his sword, with the female mercenary Kesta Garess, and a love story gone wrong.
Rigg escaped with one or two hits left. He must be hiding with Grigori, who staged his own death to discredit the party after he was banished. They racked up about +9 unrest from 0 due to Grigori, mind you it was the month the castle was completed for -4.
