I glad that you were safe. If you're in another earthquake, please don't shut yourself in anywhere since you could become trapped! I was lucky enough to be home from work that day too. Most people in my neighborhood convened in an open park until after the shaking stopped, even though it was snowing.
Thank you for sharing the horrible experience. It helps us who weren't there understand the reality of what happened from a much better perspective than we can get from the news. I remember hearing about it in an Orlando hotel when Kelly's parents visited. I jumped onto Facebook to see if anyone was saying anything. We were so glad to hear you were ok.
For not having a plan, you picked a good spot to hide yourself. (Though I agree you should leave the door open so you don't become trapped.) Do you have a whistle? God forbid you ever do become trapped, having a whistle will help people find you even after your voice has given out.
The place where I hid was a sliding door, and I'd closed it to keep things from falling into the place. I don't have a whistle, but even if I did, what are the odds I'd be near that whistle if an earthquake hit? They gave me one when I was studying in Kyoto, though. Not sure what happened to it.
I didn't want to run outside because of all the electric wires running all over the place outside. Plus it all happened too fast for me to get anywhere except under my bed. I read a lot of sites about what to do in an earthquake and they say it's people who try to move from where they are that are in trouble. You can trip and fall all over horrible things by running. The advice seems to be to stay put and try to get under something sturdy if there's something nearby.
