Punctuate this!

I'd like to get people's opinions on a punctuation question: how many spaces do you put after a period?

The rule created for typewriters was two spaces.  But, with word processors and modern fonts, one is standard for many things.

Usually, I prefer (and am in the habit of) two spaces.  This is especially true in my academic writing, where I enjoy

I always put one. I never thought about why though.

I've always used two because I thought that was the standard.
But am happy to hear there might be other alternatives!
