Got your attention, eh? Yeah, it is usually the x-rated stuff and sad passings that catches someone's eye. I fooled you ever so slightly on that one. Sorry. It is some sort of a good-bye though

I'm sorry to see this. I've enjoyed the things you have written in the time you have been on my friends list. However, I do understand. I've made so many good friends through LJ, including my beloved partner, and people I've traveled to see, and others I hope to someday, that I feel like it is a part of my social universe. But you are right that more meaningful relationships are usually built in person. Hugs, and best wishes for the future.
Although I haven't commented much, I have always enjoyed reading (and will continue to read) your posts, especially about the vacation to Greece. Coincidentally, some people that I hinted at in my post have subsequently defriended me promptly, so there is one problem solved. I could just set filters, but that defies the term "friend" for me. Thanks!
I'd be sorry to see you stop posting entirely, I enjoy reading your posts. For me lj wins over other social networking sites because even with the inconsequential posts there is a certain amount of depth to it that can't be achieved on facebook or twitter, and more than that there is some history too, you can comfortably spend a couple of hours looking back on the history of a "friend" from time to time. But mostly I like the way it connects me with people of similar interests in other parts of the world and gives me a better understanding of the differences and similarities of our lives. I have met a number of my lj friends in person and while I have no set program to do so, I'd certainly like to meet more of them. Given that the vast majority of them live on another continent though, that's not necessarily practical.
Oh yes, LJ wins hands down over over social networking sites, but a lot of people now cross-post from Facebook or Twitter with one-liner messages and badly taken pictures of every pimple that they got overnight and that's just not very cool to see (or read). I also enjoy your blog, because it is very real and down-to-earth. You guys seem to be traveling a lot and I don't have the luxury to travel at this point, so it's a welcome read to read about your experiences - or just the every day mini-disasters, like home remodeling or computer issues that I can relate to. Thank you!
A lot of what you are complaining about...regarding other bloggers...could have been controlled by controling who you put on your friends list...or who you filter out from reading. Not everyone writes the silly kind of posts that you refer to. Some of my friends have made me think differently about life and have changed attitudes and habits about things. I have gotten rid of (or simply ignore) the rest
So, while I respect your personal tiredness regarding Live Journal (it's not for everyone) I don't quite understand your mockery of people that YOU, yourself, added to your list...unless you mean to say that anyone and everyone on LJ annoys you.
An angry post...your departure could have been handled better....in my view
I tend to think that Facebook, entering posts on a cellphone keypad and swapping substance for simple cruft meant for gratification ruined the face of blogging as it was when I got started. That said, there are still a great deal of people out there who use the medium wonderfully and are a joy to read and interact with. I'm sort of guilty for letting my blog get neglected, but that reflects my personal space right now. Also, quite a few have found out the low signal/noise ratio of the like of Facebook is not meant for the long run and are returning to conventional blogging. So, there's hope. Or, as I like to say, das ist gut.

Keep the flame going for us old-skool techies who came of age right before the Internet age. Our grumpiness only makes us stronger. ;)
