For You

"His S.W.A.T. Armor absorbed most of the impact, but he still lost a lot of blood from the wound in his chest. He has some burns on his face and chest besides the smaller cuts and bruises, but thankfully nothing's broken or dislocated." Kat paused, writing a few things down on her clipboard, looking at the prone form of Bridge in the infirmary bed. "He's lucky. If he hadn't been in S.W.A.T. Mode, he'd be a lot worse off. As it is, he'll still need to rest for several days at least before he can go back to action." Jack, Z and Syd all swarmed around Bridge, relieved that he was going to be alright, but Sky hung back, holding his stomach, which was aching and twisting with guilt. He had some of his own injuries that needed to be mended, but had brushed off any medical attention until Bridge was taken care of. His mind drifted back, tracing his own steps and actions.

Earlier that day, he and Bridge had gotten into an argument. The fact that it was the two of them was a rare occurrence in and of itself- Bridge was almost never one to argue back, even when his feelings were hurt- and even more unusually, it had turned downright vicious from both sides. It whad all started with something that, upon reflection, seemed so petty- Sky was getting annoyed with Bridge's refusal to tidy up his side of the room, Bridge gave his usual counter that he couldn't find anything if it was neat, and for some reason it went downhill from there. Sky called Bridge a slob, Bridge retaliated that he was too stiff and anal-retentive, Sky countered that at least he acted like a Ranger, Bridge said he'd rather be messy and fun-loving than an asshole... then the two of them were pulled apart. They were given a thorough chewing-out by Cruger, then sent in separate directions to patrol so they could both cool off.

Sky's own patrol had nearly turned deadly when he'd been notified of some strange activity nearby and stumbled upon Broodwing in the midst of making a massive arms deal with an alien mob boss. Sky called the Delta Base for help before diving right in to interrupt the two aliens, knowing that if he'd waited for backup to arrive, the deal would be over and both criminals would be long gone. However, it turned out to be one of the stupidest things he'd ever done; he quickly found himself in over his head, surrounded by a squad of Orangeheads courtesy of Broodwing. He tried to fight them off, but was swiftly overwhelmed, even after summoning S.W.A.T. Mode, and forced to demorph. Broodwing was about to declare himself victorious and ordered the Orangeheads to move in and capture Sky- when Bridge came onto the scene, having heard his teammate's call for help, speeding there as fast as he could. He had then jumped in front of Sky and taken a blast meant for him, a vicious one that actually damaged his armor, shattered his helmet visor and injured him just before the other Rangers burst in to save them. He's going to be OK, Sky thought. So why do I still feel so horrible?

"Sky?" He was startled by Z's voice; she'd gone up to him, grabbed his shoulder. "Come on, I'm sure he'll be happy to see you when he wakes up."

"Oh... yeah, sure," said Sky, moving to stand beside the infirmary bed and gazing down at his friend.

"Are you alright?" Z asked him, and he nodded.

"It wasn't your fault, Sky," said Syd, as though she could sense what he was thinking. "It could have happened to any of us."

"Yeah..." Kat told the Rangers that Bridge wasn't going to wake up for quite a while, several hours at the very least, but that didn't make them want to leave. Sky especially was determined to stay by Bridge's side until he was awake, almost glad that it wouldn't be right away so he could try and think of something to say, a way to apologize, to tell Bridge that he was sorry for being a jerk, to make things right between them...

As the night worse on and he showed no signs of waking, however, the others soon began to nod off right where they sat. Dr. Felix shooed Jack, Z and Syd off to bed, telling them he would send for them if anything changed, but he could not get Sky to go.

"I'm staying," he said firmly, and there seemed to be something in his eyes, or his voice, or his expression, that told Dr. Felix that the tall man was not going to leave. However, Sky couldn't deny the fact that he was tired, especially because he'd been in battle himself, and soon found himself fighting to stay awake, pinching himself, reciting regulations to himself, anything to stay alert. However, his eyelids drooped lower and lower, and he kept leaning forward-

"Sky?" a soft voice asked. Sky abruptly raised his head, blinking hard. It was early morning, the infirmary now filled up with orange sunlight. Sky had somehow ended up resting on Bridge's bed, laying his head on his crossed arms, sleeping alongside his teammate. Bridge was wide awake... Sky wondered how long he had been, watching him.

"Bridge," Sky said hoarsely, sitting up and rubbing his eyes. "I..."

"I'll save you the trouble," said Bridge. "I don't blame you for what happened, I'm not angry with you, no it was not your fault, really, really it wasn't, and no apology is necessary. You don't need to say it and I don't need to hear it because I already know it." Sky's mouth fell open. "I know you, Sky. Stop looking so surprised." Bridge sat up, wincing slightly, and looked over at Sky, a shy smile crossing his lips. Much to Sky's surprise, a leather-gloved hand reached for one of his own, squeezed it reassuringly. "And yes, I do know you can be an insufferable jerk and that we were fighting over something really dumb. Doesn't change the fact that I love you, that you're my best friend, and most importantly, that you would've done the same thing or more for me in a heartbeat. You know it, and I know it, so you don't need to say that." Another squeeze. "Did I miss anything?"

"No," Sky said, returning the smile somewhat reluctantly. "No, you covered everything."

"Good." Bridge let go and lay back down, turning his head to look at Sky. "Now that that's out of the way, you should go get the others. I need to be fussed over now."

"Anything for you, buddy." Sky patted his shoulder before getting up to carry out his request.
