It was, Z would reflect later... much later, when the embarrassment had worn off and her teammates stopped giggling at her and teasing her... a very good thing that (with the exception of Sky) her teammates didn't really mind breaking the rules, or even perhaps the law, once in a while.
It was even better that Bridge and Sky were boyfriends, that they weren't often fighting with one another nowadays, and that Bridge could distract Sky from any rule breaking so well with a kiss. Said kisses were often accompanied by a look that they were quite sure meant that it was more than a simple expression of love.
These were good things because one night, after an especially tough mission, she and Syd had gone out and gotten completely drunk to take their minds off of it for a while. Jack had had no problem with obtaining some "comfort", as he called it, for them, ensuring that they had both a safe place away from the base to drink, and a way to get home once they were done. They'd timed it to happen on a night where Cruger and Isinia were off-planet due to the Commander being needed at a meeting, leaving Kat and Boom to run things, making them even less likely to get caught. Bridge and Sky had also gone out to unwind in their own way- dinner and a movie. Bridge had persuaded Sky to see the newest superhero flick, as well, guaranteeing two hours in the theatre and a late exit- plenty of time for Syd and Z to get back to the base, hopefully sober up a bit without Sky noticing how they were acting.
So it was that the two girls sat together in the rec room, reflecting on their lives and trying very hard to not look and act like they were drunk.
"My brain's so... so full..." Z reached up and placed her hands on either side of her head. "I wish it was like a lemon, so I could squeeze it and get all the excess crap out. I mean, I already look like a lemon anyway, since I wear yellow!" Syd giggled, taking a drink from the water bottle she held, accidentally absorbing it into her hand.
"You shouldn'ta had all those flirtinis. I told you they could be brutal," she said, looking at her now-plastic fist and laughing loud and long.
"You ever wonder what'd happen if your hand got destroyed as something else?" Z asked, wide-eyed. "We should try it sometime."
"No way!" Syd shoved Z a lot harder than she intended to, sending her roommate tumbling. Syd carelessly dropped her bottle and went to help her, before looking down at the wet seat of her pants. "DAMNIT. Maybe I shoulda absorbed my martini glass instead."
"No thanks," said Z, hauling herself back up. "I don't think I could stand you walking around with pink glass hands. Oh, and with sparkly hearts and roses, like that particular glass. Was bad enough when you had diamond hands..."
"But it'd be so cute!" Syd protested. "Maybe I should start to coordinate my hands with the rest of my wardrobe..."
"Be easy, since you wear pink every day, even when you're in civilian clothes," Z grumped, swiping Syd's water and attempting to drink, glaring at the bottle when she realized it was empty. The two then jumped as they heard voices out in the hall... then the unmistakable sound of a deep, wet kiss, accompanied by a groan of pleasure. Syd and Z watched, grinning, as Bridge and Sky walked into the rec room sideways. The two were in a passionate embrace, lips locked, Sky's red shirt half-unbuttoned, obviously oblivious to everything around them and not expecting to have an audience at such a late hour. "Whoa! FREE SHOW!" Z whooped.
Bridge and Sky immediately pulled apart, Sky turning even redder than his shirt with anger, Bridge looking horrified.
"What the-" Sky sputtered. "You two- past lights out- dorm-"
"You're out late, too," Z pointed out.
"Yeah, so what're you gonna do, punish yourself?" Syd asked, sticking her tongue out at him. Teeth bared, Sky stormed inside his and Bridge's room. Bridge rubbed the back of his head, frowning, seemingly unsure of whether to follow him.
"Awww, Bridgey, 'm sorry," Syd said, getting up and going over to him, giving him her usual little pout and grabbing his arm, hugging it. "Hope we didn't ruin things..."
"It's alright," Bridge said, smiling in return. "He doesn't like it when he's being a hypocrite and it gets pointed out to him, but he'll get over it. Probably really quickly, since we had a nice date and he was... is... in a good mood."
"For once," said Z, getting up and stumbling a bit as she attempted to get a fresh water from the synthesizer. "He'll prob'ly bust us in the morning."
"Doubtful," said Bridge, now grinning.
"How can you be so suuuuure?" Syd wanted to know, hugging his arm even tighter.
"Trust me," said Bridge. An awkward silence than passed before he said "Ah, Syd? Mind letting go of my arm? I, ah, want to go to bed. You two probably should, too."
"Ohhh, 'm sorry," she said, releasing him. "Have a good sleep!"
"Sleep. Sure will." Bridge dashed inside his and Sky's room without another word, and they heard the elecronic lock getting clicked shut seconds later.
"Mmmmm, I wanted him to stay out here sooner," Syd pouted. "I like talking to my Bridgey. But I want him to be happy, too! And he looked so happy! So he's welcome to go back to his room and... and go to sleep!"
"Yeah, they're gonna go to sleep, I'm sure. ... Damn that was hot," Z declared, plopping back down on a couch. "They need to kiss in front of us more often."
"Yup," Syd agreed, plopping down next to her. "I'm never jealous of other people, but you know what? I'm jealous of them!" Z raised an eyebrow at her.
"Why?"
"Because they've got each other, and I'm so perfect but I'm still single!"
"By your own choice," Z pointed out. "And because you're in S.P.D. You can't make a relationship work and be in S.P.D. right?"
"But they do it! And... Sky's... Sky is breaking a rule!"
"Several rules, actually," Z agreed. "... Sky's hot, though."
"He is," Syd nodded. "Bridgey's a lucky guy, really, if you think about it."
"And Sky's a lucky guy to have Bridge," Z said, now pouting herself. "Man, why do all the good guys have to be taken or gay? If Bridge wasn't both, I so would've jumped him and fucked him senseless a long time ago."
"I woulda done the same for Sky, I think," said Syd, laying her head on Z's shoulder. "...Sometimes I wonder if I could have had a chance with him. I mean, yeah, he's an asshole, but he's a great guy, too. He was like this when I first met him- still a handbook monitor, but relaxed, too. So... cool and smooth and a great Ranger..."
"Bridge accepted me right away. He's so amazing." Z sank down on her side, now feeling totally lonely and miserable, and Syd lay down with her.
"They both are..."
"Hey! We should be boyfriends!" said Syd, throwing a fist into the air. She knew that it didn't make much sense, but it felt good.
"Syd. We're girls."
"But we can still be boyfriends, can't we? Bridge and Sky have each other, and now we can have each other."
"...Yeah! Let's be boyfriends," said Z, throwing an arm around Syd, liking the idea, as illogical as it was. "Let's start right now."
"Okay!"

When Sky came out into the rec room several hours later for a drink of water, having gotten over his embarrassment fairly quickly and sharing a passionate night with Bridge, he had to blink several times to make sure he wasn't seeing things when he spotted Syd and Z.
The two girls were snuggled contentedly on the floor, Syd using Z's chest for a pillow, a tangle of limbs and hair. Several bright pink lipstick marks were on Z's face.
Sky was so dumbfounded that he roused a half-asleep Bridge, who looked just as stunned as he did when he'd been dragged out into the rec room to look.
"Wow, uh... should we... do something?" Bridge asked nervously. "Like, put them to bed?"
"...Yeah," Sky nodded. "I don't really want to wake them up by accident, but I also don't want them to get in trouble in case someone else spots them." Bridge swallowed hard, wondering if Sky was able to tell- "I know that they were drinking, Bridge. It was pretty obvious from the way they were acting. I don't like it, but I'm not going to rat on them, if you're thinking that. I know it would be hypocritical of me..." As he spoke, he gently disentangled Syd and scooped her up. She chuckled slightly in her sleep.
"That's good," said Bridge, hefting Z's limp form with some difficulty and following Sky, setting her on her yellow bunk as Sky arranged Syd on her pink one. As soon as the two were settled, Bridge and Sky tiptoed back into their own room. "...I wonder what they were doing and talking about, anyway?"
"I don't even want to know," said Sky firmly. "And I hope I never, ever find out."
