Notes: Assumes basic knowledge of S.P.D. characters. The "Night of the Shaved Kittens" gag was taken from an episode of "Rocko's Modern Life".
It was around 2 A.M., and Sky was awake.
He didn't know why he wasn't tired, and this fact annoyed him.
None of his usual methods allowed him to rest, either- snuggling with his (naturally) fast-asleep boyfriend didn't help, going for a walk did nothing, an ostensibly relaxing shower had only served to wake him even more.
So there he sat on a couch in the rec room, the remote control in his hand and the television on mute, flipping through the hundreds of channels and hoping to find something that would bore him enough to send him back to sleep. He scoffed at the usual fare... old sitcom reruns, cooking shows, infomercials, movies, cartoons. Nothing he even remotely wanted to watch, though he supposed that he couldn't be picky at this particular moment. He then glanced over his shoulder as the door to his dorm room opened and a very sleepy Bridge plodded out, rubbing his eyes and yawning widely.
"Hey," Sky said softly. "Can't sleep, either?" Bridge mumbled something incoherently in return, then came over to the couch, plopped next to him, and snuggled into his side, curling up into a ball and mumbling some more; the only word he could make out was "pillow". "Oh, I guess this means you wanted your Sky pillow?" More grumbling, the tiniest of nods. "Don't get too comfortable. I'm trying to find something to help me sleep, so hopefully I won't be out here too much longer." Bridge grumbled a bit more before adjusting himself, putting an arm around Sky and seizing a handful of his blue t-shirt, his breathing quickly going slowly and steadily. Sky shook his head, reaching up to kiss his boyfriend's head, and went back to his search. He hadn't been at it for too much longer when there was the sound of another door opening, and Z and Syd came to join them, both smiling when they saw their friends. Z drifted over to them while Syd pushed a second couch closer and climbed into it.
"Is this a private party?" she asked.
"Nope," said Sky, as Z pulled a beanbag chair on their other side, settling in it. "I don't think Bridge even realizes he came out here beyond detecting that I wasn't in bed and locating me, so I'm practically alone. You two've gotten a sudden urge to channel-surf in the middle of the night, too, huh?"
"Yeah," said Z. "Wouldn't it be funny if Jack-"As if on cue, a third door slid open, and Jack tiptoed out, dragging another beanbag chair next to Z.
"Whole-team insomnia?" he asked, then he, Sky, Syd and Z started when Bridge gave a loud snore. "Alright, almost whole-team. I can live with that. So..." He cracked his knuckles. "What's on the menu, my man Sky?"
"Nothing too long," said Sky at once. "I came out here to try and put myself to sleep, not stay awake the rest of the night like some mindless couch potato."
"Oh- turn back, turn back, turn back!" Syd cried out suddenly. "Look, classic Project Runway! I want to watch that!"
"...What's the point if you already know who wins?" Z wanted to know.
"It's still fun," Syd insisted. "And you still get to look at some awesome fashions-"
"No. Way," said Sky, Jack and Z all at once. Syd suddenly reached over to swipe the remote from Sky, but he was too fast for her, tossing it to Z, who grinned as she caught it and kept flipping. Syd sat back, crossing her arms and pouting.
"Ohhh, cool- zombie movies!" said Z. "Look, it's a marathon! Day of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, Evening of the Dead, The Dead Rise Again Part 4, Planet of the Zombie Apes..."
"I said I wanted to go to sleep, not be too scared TO sleep," said Sky, reaching for the remote, but found that he couldn't take it from Z without disturbing Bridge.
"Awww, is someone afwaid of zombies?" Jack mocked, and Sky went red, glowering at him.
"I didn't mean it like that-"
"'course you didn't," Jack nodded. "Though I am going to have to agree with him," he added, grabbing the control from Z, who gasped and glared at him. "I don't want to get caught up into it then all of a sudden be watching the sun come through the window. Hey- how about a nice action flick from the Kung Fu channel?" Sky was about to agree with him when Syd and Z protested.
"So that's supposed to put you to sleep?" Syd demanded.
"Nope, if we're not watching zombie movies, then we're certainly not watching those," said Z firmly. Jack sighed heavily.
"Think fast, Sky," he said, and Sky grabbed the remote from mid-air. "Looks like we're never going to agree on anything, so maybe we should just go back to bed..."
"Wait... this looks promising," said Sky, pausing on one channel and bringing up the program description. "Night of the Shaved Kittens? Hmm, no summary... but it sounds like a really bad horror flick. Or maybe it's a parody." He was surprised when Syd and Z suddenly burst into fits of giggles. "What- what's so funny?" He could then feel Bridge chuckling into his side, and Jack seemed to finally get something and covered his mouth to stifle his own laughter. Sky looked around at his friends, puzzled, feeling a stab of annoyance. "...Well?"
"Sorry," Z choked out. "It's just... Sky, you have no idea what channel this is, do you?"
"No, I don't," said Sky slowly. Bridge suddenly sat up, rubbing his face and grinning.
"Oh, c'mon, maybe Sky likes shaved kittens," he said thickly, and the others burst into roaring laughter.
"I would hope not," said Jack, tapping his nose. "Especially because he's with you, buddy, but then again, what you two do behind closed doors is your business." Sky scowled at the others, wondering what was so funny, but all of them were too choked up with laughter to comment for a few minutes. Z finally pulled herself up, sidled up to Sky, and whispered in his ear,
"Sky. This is one of the premium channels. That shows a certain type of movie. The kind you have to pay extra for. The kind we'd get in BIG, BIG, BIG trouble for ordering if it showed up on the base's cable bill. And 'shaved kitten'... just think about it." Sky did, then suddenly dropped the remote with a clatter as though it had scalded him. This set the others laughing again and Sky, now very red in the face, picked it back up and flicked back to a random channel.
"I, ah, think Project Runway sounds p-pretty nice, actually," he sputtered.
