Bridge slipped quietly into his and Sky's dorm room, long after night had fallen, swallowing his disappointment when he saw that his boyfriend was fast asleep, a familiar photo frame clutched to his chest.
He'd been hoping that he would have stayed up for him, so that they would be able to talk. After all, so many important things had happened that day... Sky had unintentionally allowed his father's murderer, Mirloc, to escape from prison, then had redeemed himself by morphing into the Red Ranger and bringing the criminal to justice. Bridge had been very happy for him, and had understood when he'd wanted some time alone with Jack, then with Cruger, then time by himself afterward, to think, to reflect, to accept this new perspective on himself.
Bridge came up to his own bed, then turned his back to his boyfriend and changed into his pajamas, thinking that at least they'd get to cuddle, even if Sky was too tired to talk. He crossed over to the other side of the room and was about to crawl into the familiar blue bunk when he stopped, getting a closer look at Sky. Something seemed different about him, somehow... Bridge smiled fondly at Sky and pulled his desk chair over to his bedside instead of lying down, sitting down to gaze at him, to figure out what it was.
Usually, Bridge thought after several moments, even when he was asleep, and even when they were snuggling, Sky always seemed ready to spring into action. Tense, expectant, as though he were prepared to wake up at any moment, to morph, to run off to battle.
However, this time, Sky looked completely happy. He lay on his side facing Bridge, gently but firmly holding what Bridge knew was the photograph of himself as a small boy, alongside his smiling father... instead of sleeping with his morpher, which wasn't all that unusual. His posture was completely relaxed, his legs slightly curled up, his head resting on his other arm. His whole body rose and fell with his deep, steady breathing.
And his expression...
When awake, and especially when they were around other people, genuine smiles were a pretty rare thing from Sky. Grins were even rarer. And Sky wore one now... the kind of smile, Bridge thought, that was usually reserved for him only when they were alone. When Bridge himself was this content, this relaxed, this at ease, and his boyfriend wasn't... quite like that.
Bridge took off one of his ever-present leather gloves, reached out, hesitated, then gently put a hand on Sky's bare arm. In a rush, he could see flashes in his mind's eye- of the battle with Mirloc earlier in the day, of Sky's conversations with Jack and Cruger, of Sky himself sitting alone in their room, murmuring words he couldn't hear while gazing at his father's picture.
But more importantly than that, he felt things, a whirl of emotions.
Fear. Regret. Determination. Focus. Pride. Contentment... acceptance. A sense of peace with self.
Sky had finally come to love who he was, Bridge knew.
Bridge withdrew his hand, quickly slipping his glove back on as the touch made Sky shift in his sleep, moan softly, and open his eyes.
"Hey," Bridge said quietly, pleased when Sky's contented smile just grew when he saw his boyfriend.
"Hey," Sky whispered back, adjusting himself, yawning widely before propping himself up on one arm. "...What were you doing?"
"Watching you sleep," said Bridge. "You looked so adorable..." He thought he could see Sky's face going red by the dim light outside their window. Sky set the picture down on the nightstand, gazing back at his boyfriend while Bridge returned his desk chair, then scooted over to make room. Bridge slid into the bunk, and the two put their arms around each other, sharing a deep, slow, loving kiss. "I want to hold you tonight," Bridge whispered. "You need to be held once in a while."
"I won't say no to that," Sky agreed, and though their difference in heights made it feel a little awkward at first, Sky was soon settled into Bridge's embrace, his head resting on his boyfriend's chest.
"I don't think I've ever seen you this happy before... it makes me happy," said Bridge, starting to play with Sky's hair, hesitating, then continuing when Sky nuzzled his chest in response. "...You were amazing today."
"I know... I'm so proud of myself," Sky admitted. "When I let him escape... that was probably the lowest point of my life. But I kept going when Jack kicked some sense into me, and now, I feel so strong. I feel invigorated. It took a while, but now I know that... that I am who I am, and it's nothing to be ashamed of. I don't have to be Red to be great and make a contribution to our team... to S.P.D.... to the world. Nor do I have to be that to have pride in myself and know that I'd have Dad's pride in me, too."
"That's what I've been trying to tell you all along," Bridge said with a sly grin. "But you didn't want to listen."
"I know, I know," Sky sighed. "I guess I just needed something big like that to finally realize it for myself, you know?"
"Yeah... it's alright. I still love you anyway." Sky lifted his head to gaze into Bridge's eyes, and the two adjusted, shared another soft kiss before they both fell quiet.
Bridge continued to hold Sky, to run his fingers through his boyfriend's hair, long after he'd fallen back asleep.
I'm glad you're happy with yourself now, he thought. I've loved you for who you are since before we got together... and now that you love yourself, things can only get better from here.
