If there was one thing that annoyed Sky about life at S.P.D., it was the penchant for fellow Cadets- even his own teammates- to gossip.
The handbook expressly forbid gossiping and trading rumors about one's co-workers because of the disruptive nature of it. Cruger himself actively discouraged it whenever he heard it happening. However, in spite of this, it still went on. Sky had learned to become tolerant of the lesser rumors- for example, who was up for promotion to the next level soon, or how big a mess Boom had made in the lab (and how long it would take him to top it), or what bizarre punishment chores Cruger was going to come up with next.
However, Sky felt it was going too far when others began to pry into his personal life.
He didn't realize what was going on at first. It started when he thought he caught Jack smirking at him across the center console. However, it was so brief, Sky thought he'd imagined it, for when he got a closer look, Jack was engrossed in his work.
Then, a few days later, he was passing through the rec room when he could've sworn he saw Z and Syd staring over at him. When he glared at them, though, they had their heads turned away from him and were now giggling. He dismissed this as some stupid girl talk until later that same day, when he was sitting together with Bridge on a couch and having a snack, and this time actually watched them staring at him at length out of the corner of his eye before turning away, whispering to each other.
"Alright, what's the secret?" he asked them, trying to keep his voice casual and hide his annoyance.
"Nothing," Z said quickly.
"I saw you guys staring at me," said Sky, furrowing his eyebrows.
"We weren't staring at you," Syd insisted.
"Fine. Whatever," Sky snapped. Bridge looked as though he were about to say something, then shrugged and stuffed the rest of his banana into his mouth, smiling through his mouthful at Sky. Sky caught himself smiling back- before a loud snort of barely-suppressed laughter came from the two girls. "WHAT is so funny?" he demanded, but Syd and Z both stuck their tongues out at him, got up out of their seats, and went into their own dorm room. Sky shook his head. "What was that all about?"
"Beats me," said Bridge.
The stares and giggles died down briefly after that- but flared up again a few days later, this time with even lesser-ranked Cadets giving Sky strange looks when he passed them. However, as much as Sky prodded, pushed, and asked people to let him in on what was so funny, nobody seemed willing to speak up. He did have a creeping idea what it was about, however.
"You don't think it's about us, do you?" Sky finally asked Bridge when they were alone in their dorm room one evening.
"Hmm?" Bridge asked idly, fingers tapping away at his keyboard as he worked on editing that week's S.P.D. Academy newspaper, sucking on a soda through a straw.
"All the looks. The stares. The giggles. People acting like they know something secret about me. Do you think it's about- what happened last week?" Bridge suddenly choked on his drink and leaned forward, coughing hard; concerned, Sky got up and patted him on the back until he'd settled down. "Of course, I don't know why it WOULD be, since we promised we were going to keep the fact that we kissed quiet for now- RIGHT?" Sky asked pointedly.
"Yeah! Well, uhm, I may or may not have told Jack and Syd and Z..." Bridge looked warily at Sky, as though afraid he was going to start yelling, but Sky merely rubbed his face, made a growling noise, and went and threw himself back down on his bed. "I'm sorry, Sky," Bridge said, looking ashamed, his eyes downcast. "But kissing you made me so happy, and Jack wouldn't stop asking what I was grinning about, then Syd and Z cornered me and threatened to tickle me to death if I didn't spill the beans... ...are you mad at me?"
"Yes, I'm mad at you! My love life- and yours, for that matter- isn't ANYBODY'S business but our own!" Sky snapped. "Even moreso because dating each other is kind of against the rules and could get us separated or kicked out! Not to mention the fact that we wanted to give it time and see where this is going first!"
"We were going to have to tell the others eventually!" Bridge pointed out, now looking extremely upset. "Whether it worked out or not- did you really think we could or should hide something like this from our friends? More importantly, do you really think they've even care?" Sky opened his mouth to answer, but let it hang there, realizing that he did have a point. Still, he'd wished it had come out later rather than sooner...
"Alright, fair enough. That aside, what about the rules? It doesn't matter if we're alright with it and our friends are alright with it, it's still against regulations. And like it or not, we have to follow those... unless we want to lose our jobs or be sent to different planets entirely or something." Bridge didn't seem to know how to respond to that, and turned his head away. Sky sighed, finding himself hating to see him so miserable, and got up to stand beside him, putting a hand on his shoulder. Both were silent for a while before Bridge finally spoke up,
"If you're that afraid of us getting in trouble for going out... then maybe it would be best to stop this before it even starts. I wouldn't want either of us to get kicked out of S.P.D.... guess agreeing to try the dating thing in the first place was a stupid idea, huh?" The obvious hurt in his voice made Sky's heart ache. He put his arms around Bridge... and, before really thinking about what he was doing, reached up one hand, turned Bridge's head toward him, and kissed him softly on the mouth. Bridge leaned into it before his eyes widened and he pulled back, reaching up to shove him away. "Sky, no... if we're not going to go anywhere with this, don't do that... please..." Sky stood erect again, unable to reply, because he was wrestling with himself, as he had many times since he and Bridge had discussed their feelings for each other. He couldn't lie- he WANTED to give them a chance, to be boyfriends with Bridge, to experience being in love... which went completely against his instinctive reaction to break it off before it got off the ground, to follow the rules, to not risk his career on something, to put S.P.D. above his own desires, as always.
"...You guys are a bad influence," he finally mumbled.
"Huh?" Sky swore to himself inside his own head and slowly crouched down until he was at eye level with Bridge.
"I said you guys are a bad influence. Because I'm finding myself not really caring that we're breaking the rules." Bridge's eyes widened, and he looked as though he didn't really believe Sky. "...I want this, Bridge. I want to give this- us- a chance."
"...even though it may get us kicked out?" Bridge asked, his voice almost a whisper.
"Even despite that. Honestly, in the grand scheme of things, it's not really that big a deal. If Cruger didn't kick me out after I indirectly almost got him killed by letting Dru in... I don't- I don't think he'll mind this too much, right?" Bridge swallowed hard, then a soft, shy smile spread across his face, and Sky smiled back, reached up to cup his cheek with one hand. The two then embraced.
"I hope we're not making a mistake," Bridge said.
"We haven't even started dating yet," Sky teased. "We'll see what happens, when it happens... and until then, let's not worry about it."
"Okay. Can I tell our friends this time?"
"We'll tell them together," said Sky. "And if it causes more whispering behind our back- then let it."
"Or I could start spreading one that Syd and Z were the ones kissing instead of us," Bridge grinned.
