I've been writing a series of interludes to SB, showing a few events that happen offscreen/off-camera from other characters' perspectives, as a bit of a break before beginning the sequel. The first of these interludes is coming up between chapters 13 and 14, so look forward to it. :D
I'll put up some more stuff for Z Week tonight. In case you couldn't already tell, I'm permanently switching this journal to a Z theme, since my normal LJ is already Bridge-themed and my Journalfen journal is Sky-themed and I hate having two journals look the same. I've started work on a Z moodtheme, which I'll have available for download once it's finished (right now my Bridge moods are staying as filler, but they'll slowly be replaced).
Chapter 11 (Sky)
"I was afraid something like this was going to happen," said Commander Cruger after I'd told him what happened at the parking garage. "I was hoping that first alien was the only one of his kind."
"Me, too, sir," I said, rubbing my sore sides. "Now we know why the first one was able to hold Bridge captive for so long and evade us so easily. They can appear and disappear like nothing, and they are incredibly strong."
"Yes... they are dangerous opponents. Are you OK, Cadet?" Cruger asked. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
"Just a little shaken, sir," I said, my heart still thumping rapidly within my chest. "And worried that they're going to attack Bridge. We should notify Z, she's on guard duty right now."
"Already done," said Kat, who was at her station behind the Commander. "I told her to tell the hospital staff to be on alert for suspicious activity, as well. We can only hope those aliens are above making good on their threats to attack it."
"Thank you, Kat," said Commander Cruger. "They will all need to be on alert, because the reality is that those criminals don't need to attack directly to do their dirty deed. It's not unusual for people in hospitals to die suddenly, especially ones in grave condition like Bridge, and we know these aliens are probably crafty enough to make it look natural." I cringed inwardly, knowing that he was right and feeling sick to my very core at the thought of Bridge dying now, just after he'd been given another chance at life, just after we'd started our relationship... "Cadet Tate, please find Cadets Herdman and Drew and let them know of the threat as well. Unfortunately, unless either of those aliens attacks someplace, there's little we can do right now except stay vigilant, since they're intent on keeping themselves hidden and striking at random. Dismissed." I saluted Cruger, then headed off to find Syd and Tessie. They were both in the rec room, Tessie brushing Syd's hair as the latter filed her nails.
"What's up, Sky?" Syd asked, looking up at me with concern.
"Not here," I said shortly, as there were many other cadets around. The two followed me out into the hallway, where we found a quiet corner and I explained to them what had happened. "I'm telling you, that guy nearly broke half my ribs just by holding me still," I said, showing them the large bruise forming on my side. "He's very strong. He could have snapped my neck right then and there, and nobody would have been the wiser. That's why I'm so worried."
"I'm sure if they took us on in a fair fight, we'd be a match for them," Syd replied thoughtfully. "But they're relying on stealth and surprise to gain the upper hand."
"Mmm," I said. "That's the trouble, too- if using stealth gives them an advantage, I doubt if they decide to attack they're going to stop and let us morph so we can level the playing field. From what we've seen of them so far, they're experts at acting quickly, before the rest of us even have time to think. We'll have to find a way to outsmart them."
"If only we knew what they were," said Tessie, rubbing the back of her head. "Kat and I've combed through all of the criminal databases and haven't found a species or criminal remotely resembling them, and there are thousands of types of aliens registered."
"Really? That is odd," I said. "I thought we'd logged all of the known species in the multiverse..."
"Maybe they're robots," Syd suggested. "Or they just use armor to hide their identities."
"Either that, or they're somethin' nobody has seen before," said Tessie darkly.

As Bridge's recovery dragged on and on, the group of alien assassins kept up a constant threat. We found out that there were five total- one for each of us- and one working by himself was more than capable of overpowering us when unmorphed, especially because they tended to attack so swiftly we weren't given a chance to defend ourselves. When transformed, we fared a lot better, but we rarely could, as they would attack unexpectedly, rough us up and withdraw. We still were not able to find out anything about what sort of creatures they were or where they had come from, which was bad, because no data meant we couldn't find their weakness- and meanwhile, they were fighting us off and on and learning our weaknesses. None of we Rangers had sustained any more severe injuries, but I had a feeling it was only a matter of time, which is why, one rainy morning when I was guarding Bridge, I kept looking everywhere nervously.
"Why... scared? Doubt... any attacks," he said as I helped him exercise, allowing him to lean on me a little as we made a circuit of the nearby hallways of the hospital. He'd gotten a lot stronger since being moved out of the ICU, able to breathe on his own and walk with some assistance. However, he wasn't entirely well- he was only able to talk in a broken, halting fashion, and his doctors said it was possible he'd never regain the ability to speak normally both because of his injury and due to psychological effects from the trauma.
"You never know when those things will pop up," I said. "They've threatened to come back and finish you off. I'm not letting them take you again." Bridge squeezed my hand.
"My... hero."
"Shut up," I muttered, blushing in spite of myself and trying to hide the fact that I was pleased that he was in a good mood today, for besides the physical scars of his ordeal, Bridge bore many mental ones. He was definitely moodier than I had ever known him to be and was often depressed, and this coupled with my nervousness and uncertainty was making our relationship develop pretty slowly.
We stopped in an empty corridor, where he leaned more heavily on me, put one arm around me and closed his eyes, which only made me blush more. I often volunteered to guard him in place of the others now, with the selfish reason that I wanted to use the time to get us used to more intimate physical contact with each other, however slowly it went. Bridge seemed to have no problem with it, but I was still a little uncomfortable doing anything more than holding hands, even while alone; indeed, we hadn't even kissed yet. I'd made a few half-hearted attempts, but always stopped before going through with it, because I was still a little floored (and squicked) by the fact that I was dating another guy. We hadn't yet told the others about our budding relationship, either, both because I still wasn't sure we'd go anywhere as a couple and because Bridge was very shy about telling the others he was gay. I awkwardly patted the top of his head, then we broke contact and went back to his room. If anybody saw us holding hands, I could pass it off as him leaning on me for support...
"There you two are," said Mrs. Carson as we came back into the room, and I let go of Bridge and helped him back into bed, swearing fluently to myself in my head, as we'd almost gotten caught. "I wanted to stop in before I went to work today, but you weren't here when I came in, and I was afraid you'd been attacked, or-"
"Worry... too much... Mama," Bridge told her. "Have Sky... here."
"I'm your mother, of course I'm going to worry," she said, kissing him on the cheek. "I want to make sure you're taken care of, Bridgey. You're getting better, but you're still not 100% well, and your friends keep getting called away. I should take some more time off of work until those horrible monsters are contained..."
"Mrs. Carson, please, we've got it well under control," I said, giving her my most winning smile. "It won't do you any good to make yourself sick worrying, will it? Go on, you have a job just like we Rangers do. It's been a quiet day so far, I don't think anything's going to happen, and if it does, that's what I'm here for."
"Well, alright," she said reluctantly, kissing Bridge's cheek again and starting to leave. "I love you, my baby boy. As much as I don't want to leave, I really have been away from work for too long. Have a good day, boys. Bridgey, mind you rest if you're tired, and Schuyler, don't you dare leave his side."
"He won't," Bridge said, also giving her a winning smile as she hugged him tightly. "Love you too." I watched her go, and as soon as she'd disappeared into an elevator, I pulled a chair close to Bridge's bed and sat down with him. "Love... Mama. But... can be... too much."
"I know," I said. "She's so intent on you getting rest, but she's not helping by being here to fuss over you all hours of the day and night." He nodded, touching the long scar on his neck. "Still hurts, huh? Don't talk any more today, then." We held hands again, and I was just starting to feel like things were going right for a change... when my communicator beeped. Sighing, I answered it.
"Syd is being attacked near your location," came Kat's voice. "Tessie, Z, and Commander Cruger are on their way, but they're further away. She needs your help."
"I'm on it," I said, frowning at Bridge before running to aid Syd, morphing into the Red Ranger as soon as I left the building. I immediately drew out my Delta Blasters as I spotted the villain; it was one of the assassins, who called himself Seragus and had a griffin's head on his shoulders. He was attacking an unmorphed Syd with his clawed hands when I blasted him square in the middle of his back, surprising him. "Leave her alone and fight me, you coward!" I roared. Seragus turned to face me.
"Seragus isn't a coward!" he screeched, extending his wings. "Seragus thinks it's time to get his claws into Arrogant Hero Boy!"
"Bring it on!" He flew straight at me, and I swiftly dropped onto my back, firing into his chest as he soared over me. Syd morphed and ran over to me, helping me up, as Seragus stood examining the damage to his chest armor. "You want some more?" I shouted.
"You can't defeat Seragus that easily!" he cried, and Syd and I barely ducked out of the way as his claws unexpectedly shot out, extending toward us, missing impaling our helmets by inches.
"Oh, great, he comes complete with extendable claws, too. These guys just don't know how to die," panted Syd as she fired her blaster at one of the claws. "They CAN'T be organic, because we've shot holes in their armor and they don't even bleed. But if they're robots, why can't we disrupt their systems in any way? Their armor is tough, but we don't seem to be able to do ANY disabling damage to them whatsoever."
"I don't know," I admitted, throwing both of us to the ground as the claws shot out again and I fired at Seragus' face. "They really are like nothing we've ever seen before. At least this time we're actually connecting with some shots." Seragus then screeched with rage as some more laser shots hit him in the back, and a green blur shot past him, turned, and ramped off a nearby incline into the air.
"YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAW!" yelled Tessie, who had morphed into the Green Ranger, as she plugged him over and over with her Deltamax Striker, steering her motorcycle with one hand. "I'm gonna hunt me some chicken and fix it for dinner tonight. Who's with me? Yeeeehaw!"
"Oh, good fricking grief," I muttered, covering my face with one hand as she circled again and Seragus, enraged, tried in vain to spear her.
"SERAGUS IS NOT A CHICKEN! SERAGUS IS GOING TO CHOP UP MISS GREEN SALAD!"
"Aww, now you've hurt my feelin's," said Tessie, skidding her motorcycle to a stop beside Syd and me and hopping off. "I think I might have to catch and cook you for that. You're nothin' but a big chicken. Buck buck."
"Tess. Shut your MOUTH or you're going to PISS HIM OFF and we're ALL GOING TO DIE!" I hissed, but she shook her head as the three of us fired and dodged. I noticed that it was a little easier to dodge after she'd taunted him, however.
"I see!" said Syd. "Good thinking- his attacks are getting more erratic because he's angry. We should keep up the name-calling."
"You can't be serious!" I moaned. "He thinks being called a chicken is insulting?"
"But he IS one," protested Tessie.
"He's an EAGLE, Tess. A griffin. Not a chicken," I told her.
"But isn't a griffin a fancy name for a chicken?"
"...Are you telling me you don't know what a chicken-"
"I GREW UP IN PODUNK, KENTUCKY, thickhead! Of course I know what a chicken is! Just tryin' to lighten things up, right?"
"Don't call me a thickhead! That's so disrespectful, I could demote you right here-"
"Would you two kindly remember WE'RE IN THE MIDDLE OF A BATTLE HERE and help me?!" Syd interrupted huffily as she pulled a glove off and grabbed hold of one of Seragus' claws, absorbing the type of metal he was made from and bending with all her might. I quickly shot at the bend, and it snapped off. Seragus fell back, staring at his broken claw, perplexed. "One down, nine to go," said Syd. "I like those odds." The Delta Cruiser then pulled up, and a morphed Z and Cruger hopped out along with R.I.C.
"Sorry we're late," said Z. "Looks like you all were managing fine on your own, though."
"Good work, team," said Commander Cruger. "It looks like Seragus is about to meet his end." The five of us faced the "chicken", who grabbed a handful of metallic feathers from his wings and flung them at us. I leapt into the air, shooting several of the projectiles down, as Cruger sliced at one of the menacing claws with his Shadow Saber and the girls kept firing shot after shot into the alien's body. "I don't understand it," growled Cruger as his sword broke a second claw. "Even a robot shouldn't be able to endure all of this punishment without at least malfunctioning slightly!"
"Should we contain him, sir?" I asked, dodging another feather barrage.
"Be my guest," said Cruger, leaping out of the way as I pulled out my morpher and set it to Judge.
"Seragus the Assassin," I said. "For repeatedly attacking unarmed Rangers and civilians-whoa!" I ducked a stabbing claw before quickly finishing, "-as well as being part of the conspiracy to kidnap and kill the Blue Ranger and force SPD to disband... you are found guilty!" Tessie, Syd, Z and I formed the Canine Cannon and were barely able to contain Seragus, as he kept up his constant attack even while we fired at him.
"Excellent work, all," said Cruger, nodding as he demorphed and picked up the containment card, along with a few of the dropped feather weapons. "Cadet Herdman, Cadet Delgado, Cadet Drew, let us get back to the base and begin our analysis of this villain. Cadet Tate... I believe you have somewhere to be." I demorphed, saluted him, and went back toward the hospital, anxious to be with Bridge again.
