War of 1812

America leaned against the earthen wall of the cellar. The food stores were gone, along with anything else that would have made his stay in this dank make-shift prisoner of war cell comfortable. He felt stupid that he had been caught. He hadn't expected Canada to come after him while England was distracting him on the Great Lakes. He should have been out there, been part of the naval victory that surely had England breaking whatever object he'd been holding when he heard. America grinned into the darkness at that, he would have liked to have seen his face. He was going to be a determined thorn in the other nation's side as long as he could. That would teach England.

He got up when he heard someone on the other side of the cellar door, the catch of the key was obvious in the big padlock. America could have broken it down if he wanted to, but the small Canadian regiment didn't realize who they had locked underground. It would be better if it didn't get back to England. He shifted to stand in one of the corners, where the light wouldn't immediately reach. Plans went through his head, anything to escape.

He watched a man's boots descend the stair, a lantern in one hand. When the light revealed the descender's face, America realized that no option was going to work. When his eyes met Canada's, he knew he wasn't going anywhere.

"Close the door, please." Canada said to the soldier standing on the other side of the door. The door creaked shut and the sunlight that had creeped through was gone, leaving only the flickering lantern light.

America crossed his arms and looked away, "What do you want, Canada?"

"To find out what you were after. I've heard what everyone thinks, and what my people and your people think. But I have not heard from you." Canada had his back to him now, setting the lantern up onto one of the empty shelves. America examined the red uniform coat.

"I can't talk to you when you are wearing that." America replied. Canada looked back at him, confusion in his eyes for a moment before plucking at the sleeve of the jacket as though realizing. He shrugged it off, settling it a short distance from the lantern.

"That better."

"Now you look like my brother." America said, leaning against the wall, arms still crossed. Canada moved over to stand beside him, close enough that their shoulders touched.

"Will you tell me now?"

"No." came the terse reply. Canada sighed and moved to leave, but America grabbed his hand and held it tight. Canada looked at him, a furrow in his brow. He came closer and wrapped one arm around America's shoulders. He rested their foreheads together like they would when they were children. When they were allowed to be side by side. Even if they weren't allowed to be... America leaned forward and caught Canada's lips with his. The kiss came hot and desperate, full of the loneliness that neither was allowed to admit. England hated it, they both knew it, they were too close for his peace of mind. He looked the other way before, but now...

Canada broke away, turning his face before America could pursue what they both wanted, "That's why."

"I thought if you were a part of me we wouldn't have to--" Canada put a hand over America's mouth. They stared at each other, tears threatening to fall.

"I'm not. Now get out." Canada backed away and placed on foot on the stairs. He hesitated and gave America one last look, "I suppose you'll always be you."

He left the door open at the top of the steps and America could hear him ordering the others away. America's heart felt heavy. They were too close, knew each other too well. Yet, despite the hurt, he still loved him. They needed each other.
