Family Potrait
Night 42
Momma always cries at night. Daddy screams at her and she screams back. They throw things at each other. I can hear the glass breaking. Aki stays out late more. He won't talk to me. He has these strange cuts on his wrists. They keep showing up. He won't tell me why. He won't tell me if someone's hurting him. The dinner table's silent. No one will talk to me. Momma cries at the table a lot-
Takanori dropped his pencil as the sound of shattering porcelain reached his ears from down stairs. He stared back down at his paper, tear forming in his eyes. Small salty drops of sorrow fell onto the page, distorting the graphite markings.
His mother screamed shrilly only earning a shout back. There was more banging vibrating through the walls before she yelled again.
"It's your fault we can't afford to take care of both of them! What about Akira?! He's a senior and we don't even have a thousand dollars to pay for him to go to college!"
"And Takanori?!" his father shouted back. "You think he doesn't deserve to go to college?! We should start saving for him now while he's still in kindergarten!"
"I would if you wouldn't blow your whole pay check on those whores!"
There was a sound of a slap followed by complete silence before his mother started to cry.
The page on Takanori's paper was steadily soaking while they continued to fight.
He shakily grabbed his pencil again and started to write another paragraph.
Momma please stop crying. I don't like hearing you hurt. Daddy please stop hitting momma. I don't like hearing her scream. Aki please stop leaving. I don't like being alone.
"GET THE FUCK OUT!" he heard his mother suddenly screech. There was some more yelling and crashes before the door slammed shut.
Takanori quickly ran to his window and saw his father pulling out of the driveway through his teary vision.
"Daddy!" he screamed and banged his tiny fists against the window. "Daddy!"
The car was soon driving down the street and around the corner out of sight.
He fell to his knees and curled up into a tight ball, wrapping his arms around himself. Where had his father gone? What had he done?
"Daddy please don't leave. Momma didn't mean it," he sobbed quietly into his short arms. "She didn't mean it..."

Night 63
Daddy came back today. He wouldn't talk to me. He gave momma a nasty look and laughed. Momma started bringing another Daddy home after the night he left. I don't like him. I don't want another Daddy.
Takanori sat at the dinner table that was surrounded in tension. Spoons scraped against the bottom of their bowls as they all ate the rather bland soup.
He reached for his milk, but accidentally knocked it over with his knuckles. The liquid quickly spilled from the glass and onto the tablecloth, soaking it.
"Dammit Takanori!" he heard his father growl and grabbed the little fumbling ones hands to clean the table himself.
"Daddy," he said, trying to help. He fumbled with napkins, trying to wipe up the milk. "Daddy I'm sorry-"
"Just shut up," his father growled and pushed him to the ground.
Takanori let out a small cry as a sharp pain went through his ankle. "Mommy?" a teary face looked up at his mother only to have her simply turn away. "Aki?" he choked out, throat closing with tears. His brother looked at him through the corner if his eyes but only tightened his grip on his fork and glared down at the table. "Mommy-"
"I said shut up Takanori!" his father yelled again.
"I'm done."
Everyone turned to mother as she suddenly stood up, throwing back her chair.
"And just where the hell are you going Yuko?"
"Out," was all she said before slamming the front door shut.

Day 78
Little Takanori hobbled home, his ankle having hurt since dinner those two weeks ago. A whimper passed over his lips as he accidentally twisted his bad foot on the curb. His backpack spilled over the road.
His eyes locked on a small tattered notebook that was lying in the middle of the asphalt. His notebook he had written his life down into.
"No!" he quickly sprinted towards it, stopping in the middle of the road. He flipped through the pages, making sure nothing had fell out. He paused as his fingers ran across smooth plastic. His eyes looked to the small photo of his family all sitting in front of the fire place, large smiles on all their faces. It had been taken nearly a year and a half ago though.
He immediately snapped out of his memories out the sound of a blaring horn. He turned and felt his eyes widen in horror at the large pick-up truck speeding towards him. He tried to move but only fell with a cry at the sharp crack his bones in his ankle gave. He looked back at the oncoming truck before shutting his eyes tight as he felt a bone-shattering force slam into him, sending him into a pit of darkness.

Day 170
It was bright.
That was the first thing his mind registered as his eyes opened. The lids fluttered, trying to adjust to the sudden onslaught of light.
He lifted an arm in a small attempt to block out the brightness and tried to sit up but stopped as his body screamed in unbearable pain at him. He quickly laid back down on the bed beneath him.
"Takanori?" a voice next to him suddenly said.
The younger turned, wincing at the slight discomfort of the action. His pain was quickly forgotten at the person beside him. "Aki!"
A frail smile spread on his brother's face. "Takanori… your awake," his eyes began to pool slightly with tears. He lied his head down against the mattress in relief "Thank goodness…" he whispered.
Takanori cocked his head to the side in confusion. "What happened?" His brother was actually talking to him. Where was mother and father?
"Uh?" the elder lifted his head again. "You don't remember?" he asked watching as his younger brother shook his head 'no'. "On the way home from school… from kindergarten you got hit by a truck. You've been in a coma for three months."
Takanori frowned. "A… coma?"
"It means you took a nap Takanori."
"Where is momma and daddy?"
His brother shut his mouth with a loud pop and hung his head slightly. "They got a divorce," he said quietly into his clasped hands."They're not together anymore."
Akira looked at his sibling unusual silence. "Takanori?"
"D-do I… do I have a Mommy and Daddy anymore?"
"Of course you do!" he quickly reassured the other as his eyes started to pool with tears. "You just won't be living with them anymore. You can stay with me."
"But I want to stay with Mommy and Daddy!" the little one screeched, not seeming to understand the situation.
"Takanori you can't. Look at yourself; Father broke your ankle, and you nearly got killed because of it!"
"Then I want to stay with Mommy!"
"YOU CAN'T!" the other suddenly bellowed. He quickly took a deep breath and grabbed his little brother's hand in an attempt to calm himself. "I already got custody of you, barely. I'm sorry, but… I couldn't let you go back there."
Takanori let out a small hiccup as tears continued to stream down his bubbly cheeks. He threw himself at his older brother and sobbed into his shoulder. "Please Aki. Can't we all work it out and be a family again? Daddy can be nicer to Mommy. I'll be better. I-I won't spill the milk at dinner… I'll go to sleep at night…"
"I know you would Takanori," Akira gently wrapped his arms around his brother and sat there, comforting him.
… "I know."

Day 334
Aki bought an apartment for us to live in. It's small, but we make it work. He started working at a diner as a waiter to pay for the bills. I started going to a new school. Mrs. Yamaoka is really nice. She gives me lots of candy.
I haven't seen Daddy or Momma in almost six months. Aki says it's not safe. He told me just to accept the fact that I won't see them again. I think I finally figured out what he means but…
Momma, Daddy?
… I'll be your little Taka forever right?

AN: This wasn't really for romance as much as it was for family relationships. It was for an assignment even though it's short. But I was proud of it so I posted it on here too (^^") Family's not really an easy thing for me to write about.....
