Originally had an angry, stressed entry about the unnatural prolonging and intensity of my research for what I went into it to do, but thought better of it and am instead giving you two book recommendations:

Summer of my German Soldier, by Bette Greene, and

Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson

I have to admit, I strongly disliked Summer of my German Soldier, though now it's been so long I don't remember precisely why. Loved Bridge to Terabithia, though.
