Josh Lyman
Josh will threaten Congressmen, parade his victories around the West Wing, touts his elitist superiority and make the most rash comments at the worst times, but he lives for the people and things he cares about. Call him dedicated or monomaniacal, he takes his work seriously and can't bear to let down the people closest to him. He is capable of saying and doing incredibly sweet, genuine things and can never be accused of failing to put forth his full effort--whether its personal or professional--even if the results turn out disastrous. He's a little behind the curve with navigating romantic relationships, but, as time goes on, tries harder and harder to get it right. He might be a compulsive fixer. He might be a workaholic. But he has a sharp mind and a big heart.
Leo McGarry
With all his flaws and shortcomings, Leo somehow soars as a man of integrity. He seems to possess this kick-ass but charming combination of Al Capone and Frank Sinatra. The depth of love and respect he has for Jed, and even for his staff--especially Josh, who, more than the others, seems to be like a son to Leo--is remarkable. He doesn't think twice about stepping in to take the punches. He understands the benefits of compromises and the necessity of balancing idealism with reality. Somehow, he manages to keep everyone grounded in the whirling, crazy world of the White House.
Amy Gardner
Driven and hard-working, Amy can argue circles around anyone who dares to challenge her. She will eat you--yes, you--for breakfast. She is accomplished, devoted to her cause, and strong-willed, sometimes to a fault. But, when she talks, people listen. And if you're lucky, she might let you see the side of her that dances around her kitchen in a bathrobe.
Donna Moss
A naive nobody from Wisconsin, Donna embodies personal growth and professional advancement. She's like a human sponge, soaking up information, trivial and significant, learning at light speed. She's sassy and funny, dedicated and patient, but, most of all, she's brave, venturing to new places--first from Wisconsin to New Hampshire, then away from the White House. She forges her own journey and creates opportunities for herself, but never stops caring about what she finds most important. She never loses sight of who she is and who she wants to be. She might be cute, but she's tougher than she seems.
Toby Ziegler
Toby is a man of unwavering principle. He may be sad, but he's incredibly gifted. He writes his heart, the depth of his beliefs and person, onto the page. He doesn't apologize for his actions when he believes--deep down--that he's done what's right. Not for himself, but for the rest of the country--for people he's never even met, even if he doesn't like all of them. He's brilliant, passionate, and uses pie (and lollipops, and chewing gum, and candy) as a writing aid, and that's hard not to love.
