As Andy drives, fat raindrops flatten and spread across the windshield. The wipers create a wavy filter for the rows of lawns and water-dark walkways.
Whispered rumors led her here, far from the supermarket and her home turf.
The twins sleep in their car seats as Andy slows the car to a stop and stares at the house. White brick, red door. The realtor’s sign leans with the wind in the front lawn. Confirmation.
With a twist in her chest, she nods sadly. She allows herself to construct another life--a life she rejected--before she eases on the accelerator and drives away.
