Oh I know! I don't even like most of the patterns in the book because they’re already cliché. I’m gonna make the cell phone cozy in that fuzzy blue yarn I bought the other day... I’m modifying the pattern a little bit though because that eyelash yarn is pretty thin and my cell doesn't have an antenna.
Stitch 'n Bitch is a book, AND there's already a book called Beyond Stitch 'n Bitch! SnB does have really good instructions for new knitters, and I think it's a good reference to keep around. I even like some of the patterns. But people who use phrases like, "But the pattern says to use GREEN!" freak me out.
one of the editors of bust wrote the book (debby s... can't remember right now...) and overall, the book is pretty good. and my kittyville hat (which was not posted anywhere ;)) is grey, made from lamb's pride, and wonderful.
I am a poor knitter & I didn't check gauge, so I jacked up my kittyville hat. But being a creator, I didn't add the ear flaps, ties or ears & knitted and orange I-cord, which I am going to either tie in a bow around it to make it more of a bucket hat or sew it on with a crochet flower in orange. I agree, I'd rather make something my own & really know how to knit then to faithfully reproduced a pattern in a book.
I want to do the alien illusion scarf, just so I will understand how to do it, frog it & then do the same kind of thing wigh an image that appeals to me, cowboy boot, star, or soomething like that.

Here's a heart illusion pattern-- I've not yet tried it, though:
